Recently, Chiba et al. developed a new type of bio- medical Co basedalloy of Co-29Cr-6Mo-0.14N alloy. In this alloy design, the content of N is intended to becontrolled to obtain the microstructure consisting of γ single phase. This developed alloyexhibits the lower stacking energy as compared to that of the practical bio-medical Co-Ni basedalloy, thereby resulting in the deformation behavior accompanied by strain induced ε martensitictransformation. In this work, the damage process leading to fracture during tensile testing of a biomedical gradeCo-29Cr-6Mo-0.14N alloy was analyzed on the basis of three-dimensional damage observationusing X-ray tomography and electron backscattered diffraction of the fractured specimen. Initialcracking occurred at grain and annealing twin boundaries, where strain concentrates due toimpingement of ε-hcp plates formed through strain induced martensitic transformation (SIMT).Crack propagated along interface between γ-fcc matrix and SIMTed ε-hcp on {111}, resultingin the occurrence of a quasi-cleavage fracture.Saturday, October 9, 2010, 8:15-9:00Session A17: Knee MechanicsA Sliding Stem in Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty Provides Stability andReduces Stress Shielding; a RSA Study Using Impaction Bone Grafting inSynthetic Femora*Huub Meijerink - UMC St Radboud Nijmegen - Nijmegen, The Netherlandsfile:///E|/ISTA2010-Abstracts.htm[12/7/2011 3:15:47 PM]
