No previous published dataexists regarding <strong>the</strong> financial costs <strong>of</strong> treating this challenging group <strong>of</strong> patients.ObjectiveTo compare <strong>the</strong> mean finacncial cost <strong>of</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> perpros<strong>the</strong>tic fractures and to compare <strong>the</strong>findings with <strong>the</strong> money received through <strong>the</strong> tarrif payment system.MethodsPatients were identified from a prospective database <strong>of</strong> all hip fractures at <strong>the</strong> Queen's MedicalCentre, Nottingham in <strong>the</strong> United Kingdom over a ten-year period from 1999 to 2009. Hospitalnotes were independently reviewed and data retrieved using a standardised pr<strong>of</strong>orma to record<strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fracture and for all subsequent related admissions for fur<strong>the</strong>r treatment andcomplications.
