Methods: 402 hips were used for this study (207 male, 195 female). All had both preoperativeCT and radiographic imaging before hip arthroplasty. Inclusion criteria were the absence ofprior surgery or gross pelvic asymmetry. Surgery using the mechanical navigation device wasplanned for each hip both using CT imaging and using statistical models based on AP andLateral pelvic radiographic images. Cup orientation errors that would result from planning thesurgery using radiographs instead of CT were calculated. Results:The error resulting from planning the HipSextant using plain radiographs instead of planning ona 3D model from CT imaging is listed in the four tables below.Men Right N=111Abduction Flexion AnteversionMean Error: 1.6 0 Mean Error: 1.8 0 Mean Error: 2.6 0SD: 1.1 0 SD: 1.4 0 SD: 1.7 0Max Error: 4.9 0 Max Error: 6.7 0 Max Error: 6.7 0Women Right N=94Abduction Flexion AnteversionMean Error: 1.3 0 Mean Error: 1.5 0 Mean Error: 2.0 0SD: 0.8 0 SD: 1.1 0 SD: 1.4 0Max Error: 3.7 0 Max Error: 4.8 0 Max Error: 5.6 0Men Left N=96Abduction Flexion AnteversionMean Error: 1.5 0 Mean Error: 1.5 0 Mean Error: 2.0 0SD: 1.0 0 SD: 1.0 0 SD: 1.5 0Max Error: 4.3 0 Max Error: 4.3 0 Max Error: 5.6 0Women Left N=101Abduction Flexion AnteversionMean Error: 1.4 0 Mean Error: 1.7 0 Mean Error: 2.3 0SD: 1.1 0 SD: 1.2 0 SD: 1.7 0Max Error: 5.3 0 Max Error: 4.8 0 Max Error: 6.3 0Discussion and Conclusion: The current study demonstrates that for routine circumstances, plain radiographs may be used for predicting the adjustment of a simple mechanicalnavigational device used for cup positioning.file:///E|/ISTA2010-Abstracts.htm[12/7/2011 3:15:47 PM]
