Background:Modular endoprosthetic replacements are commonly required to treat primary bone tumors aswell as solitary metastasis of the proximal femur. Modular prostheses provide an off the shelfavailability and can be adapted to most reconstructive situations for proximal femoralreplacements.Patients and methods:Twelve consecutive patients underwent resection of the proximal femur and modularendoprosthetic replacement. The mean age was 45.25 years (ranging from 19 to 66 years). Thefollow up period of the study ranged from 14 to 120 months with a mean of 40 months. TheMusculoskeletal Tumor Society (MTS) score described by Enneking et al. was used to assessfunctional outcome. Results:At latest follow up, tow cases with metastatic diseases of the proximal femur were still alivewith the disease. Another patient died after 14 months due to systemic metastasis. Eight caseswere rated as excellent and one case as good. One case with a localized soft tissue recurrence inthe surgical incision that appears six months after surgery and was excised with safety margin.ConclusionModular endoprosthetic reconstruction provides good functional outcome in patients afterproximal femoral tumour resection. They provide yet another treatment option in limb salvage. These patients have been evaluated and seem to have acceptable functional outcomes.Poster: 7Avascular Necrosis of Femoral Head: Reshaping the Head With Bone Graft*Dante Parodi - Clinica Alemana De Santiago - Santiago, ChileCarlos Tobar - Clinica Alemana de Santiago - Santiago, ChileJavier Besomi - Clinica Alemana De Santiago / Facultad De Medicina Clinica Alemana -Universidad Del Desarrollo - Santiago, ChileJaime Lopez - Clinica Alemana de Santiago / Hospital Padre Hurtado - Santiago, ChileLuis Moya - Clinica Alemana de Santiago - Santiago, ChileClaudio Mella - Clinica Alemana de Santiago - Santiago, ChileJoaquin Lara - Clinica Alemana de Santiago - Santiago, Chile*Email: danteparodi@gmail.comINTRODUCTION. Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is a condition that affectsyoung adults that progresses to joint destruction. In an attempt to defer total hip arthroplasty inthese patients, multiple treatment options have been proposed with still unsatisfactory results.file:///E|/ISTA2010-Abstracts.htm[12/7/2011 3:15:47 PM]
