In 1911, 43% of <strong>Australia</strong>ns lived in rural areas.<br />

This proportion fell steadily, and 14% of the<br />

population lived in rural areas by 1976. Between<br />

1976 and 1991 the decline appeared to have<br />

halted, and the proportion of people living in<br />

rural areas increased slightly (see graph 5.19).<br />

This may have been due to people moving to<br />

rural areas surrounding the cities, but still<br />

working in the city. However, the 1996 Census<br />

showed that, once again, the rural population had<br />

decreased as a proportion of the total population.
