Company profits<br />

Profits before income tax earned by incorporated<br />

manufacturing businesses fell by 6% between<br />

1997–98 and 1998–99, following a rise of 15%<br />

from 1996–97 to 1997–98 (table 19.14). Profits fell<br />

between 1997–98 and 1998–99 in four of the nine<br />

manufacturing subdivisions; by far the largest fall<br />

was recorded in Metal product manufacturing (of<br />

$1,060m, or 53%). Largest rises were in Wood and<br />

paper product manufacturing ($188m, or 27%),<br />

Non-metallic mineral product manufacturing<br />

($194m, or 16%) and Printing, publishing and<br />

recorded media ($164m, or 14%).<br />

Industry subdivisions contributing most to<br />

manufacturing industry profits for 1998–99 were<br />

Food, beverage and tobacco manufacturing<br />

(27%), Petroleum, coal, chemical and associated<br />

product manufacturing (21%), Machinery and<br />

equipment manufacturing (13%) and Printing,<br />

publishing and recorded media (12%).<br />

Price indexes<br />

The ABS compiles two price indexes relating to<br />

the manufacturing sector: the Price Indexes of<br />

Materials Used in Manufacturing Industries; and<br />

the Price Indexes of Articles Produced by<br />

Manufacturing Industries (see Chapter 28, Prices<br />

for more details). Tables 19.16 and 19.17 set out<br />

index numbers for selected components of<br />

those indexes.<br />
