Performing arts<br />

The ABS conducted its first survey of the<br />

performing arts industries in respect of 1996–97.<br />

These industries are made up of businesses<br />

mainly engaged in activities including the<br />

provision of music and theatre productions, the<br />

operation of performing arts venues, and the<br />

provision of other services to the arts such as<br />

casting agency operation and costume design.<br />

There were 1,399 employing businesses in the<br />

performing arts industries at 30 June 1997. These<br />

consisted of 881 businesses in the music and<br />

theatre production industry, 150 in the<br />

performing arts venue industry, and 369 in the<br />

services to the arts industry. The industries<br />

combined employed 13,359 persons at 30 June<br />

1997, and generated total income of $1,281m in<br />

1996–97. After expenses, operating profit before<br />

tax for 1996–97 was $34m, representing an<br />

operating profit margin of 3.8% (table 21.41).<br />

There were 68,994 paid performances in the<br />

music and theatre production industry during<br />

1996–97. There were 12.8 million paid<br />

attendances at these performances. In terms of<br />

paid attendance, the most popular types of<br />

productions were musicals (3.3 million<br />

attendances) and popular music productions<br />

(3.1 million).<br />

Sports industries<br />

The sports industries cover businesses and<br />

organisations involved in horse and dog racing,<br />

operations of sports grounds and facilities, other<br />

sports, and services to sports. These industries<br />

were surveyed by the ABS for the first time in<br />

respect of 1994–95.<br />

There were 5,066 businesses and organisations<br />

in the sports industries at 30 June 1995. These<br />

businesses employed 58,414 persons at<br />

30 June 1995 (table 21.42). Employment was<br />

highest in the months March to September,<br />

peaking in April (59,835 persons). The lowest<br />

month for employment was December with<br />

48,455 persons. There were a further 112,877<br />

unpaid volunteers in these industries at 30 June<br />

1995, which represented 66% of persons working<br />

in the sports industries.
