Regional differences
Table 24.13 shows the distribution by
State/Territory for 1999. These statistics are an
average of the results from the four surveys
conducted during 1999. The ACT had by far the
highest penetration rate for both computers and
the Internet (68% and 35% respectively).
Tasmania had the lowest for both (41% and 18%
respectively).
At May 2000, slightly more households in capital
cities had a computer (56%) than households in
other areas of Australia (51%) (table 24.14). The
proportion of households with Internet access is
increasing rapidly in both the capital cities and in
other areas of Australia. By May 2000, 37% of
households in capital cities had home Internet
access, an increase of 12 percentage points over
May 1999. Of households in other areas of
Australia, 26% had access to the Internet at home
by May 2000, an increase of 9 percentage points
over May 1999.
Characteristics of households with home
Internet access
Households with children and those on higher
incomes ($50,000 or more) were more likely to
have access to computers and the Internet at
home (table 24.15).
