After payments for package tours and prepaid<br />

international airfares, expenditure on food, drink<br />

and accommodation was the next highest outlay,<br />

averaging $846 per visitor (table 22.11). High<br />

spenders on food, drink and accommodation<br />

tended to be from Europe, China, Canada and the<br />

United Kingdom. Visitors from Asian countries<br />

tended to be the highest spenders on shopping,<br />

those from Indonesia recording the highest<br />

average expenditure on shopping ($654), followed<br />

by visitors from China ($606) and Taiwan ($582).<br />

Persons visiting for ‘other’ reasons<br />

(e.g. education, employment, health) spent the<br />

most on average ($6,514 per person), followed by<br />

business visitors ($4,182). Relatively high<br />

expenditure on prepaid international airfares and<br />

on food, drink and accommodation contributed<br />

to an overall high average expenditure by these<br />

two categories of visitors. Persons visiting for<br />

‘other’ reasons were also the highest spenders on<br />

shopping and education fees (table 22.11).<br />
