Taxation revenue<br />

Table 27.17 shows, for the general government<br />

sector, the amount of taxation revenue collected<br />

in <strong>Australia</strong> during 1998–99 by level of<br />

government and by type of tax. Total taxation<br />

revenue collected in <strong>Australia</strong> during the period<br />

was $181,282m and comprised 81% of total<br />

revenue. Commonwealth government taxation<br />

revenue was $139,797m and accounted for<br />

77% of total taxation revenue. Total State and<br />

local government taxation revenue was $41,699m,<br />

23% of total taxation revenue. The largest<br />

component of taxation revenue for the<br />

Commonwealth Government was income taxes;<br />

for State and local governments the largest<br />

component was property taxes.
