The index for materials used in building other<br />

than house building rose in 1999–2000 by just<br />

under one index point (table 20.18). This increase<br />

in the average reflected rises in all capital cities.<br />

between 1998–99 and 1999–2000 in most of the<br />

selected materials components. The exceptions<br />

were ready mixed concrete (a decrease of<br />

2.7 index points), structural steel (down 1.4 index<br />

points) and reinforcing steel bar fabric and mesh<br />

(down 5.4 index points).<br />

Table 20.19 presents the composition of the<br />

index in terms of the materials used. This shows<br />

that the rise in the index reflected increases<br />
