Introduction<br />

The production and supply of energy<br />

constitute one of the most important<br />

sectors of the <strong>Australia</strong>n economy. As well as<br />

supplying the power on which industry and<br />

households depend, the sector provides<br />

employment and investment opportunities, and<br />

is a major source of export earnings, all of which<br />

contribute substantially to the welfare and<br />

standard of living of <strong>Australia</strong>ns.<br />

export, or exported to other countries. In some<br />

cases, consumption takes place in <strong>Australia</strong> to<br />

produce another kind of fuel for export<br />

(e.g. Coke, LPG). Some fuels are imported into<br />

<strong>Australia</strong>, mainly crude oil.<br />

The relationships involved in the sources and<br />

uses of energy are illustrated in figure 18.1, the<br />

energy model for <strong>Australia</strong> for 1997–98, which<br />

sets out the quantities (Peta Joules) of energy<br />

imported, produced, used, stockpiled and<br />

exported.<br />

The fuels mined in <strong>Australia</strong> are either consumed<br />

here, stockpiled for future consumption or<br />
