the subject to life. The animations ‘RNA structure’, ‘RNA polymerase II’ and ‘tRNA’ explain the
structures of these molecules. ‘Translation II’ is a beautifully clear diagrammatic representation
of translation.
Online and interactive resources
www.csiro.au
This is the website of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in
Australia. CSIRO provides educational resources, particularly on environmental issues, but also on
other scientific issues, such as how to extract DNA from a banana and instructions for making a DNA
model.
www.hhmi.org/biointeractive
BioInteractive is a free resource for teachers and students, including animations, short films and
apps. There are too many resources to list here, but a few examples are chosen. (HHMI in the web
address refers to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.)
’Great Discoveries in Science: The Double Helix’ is a short film (17 min) telling the story of the
scientists and evidence involved in the discovery of the structure of DNA.
There is also a mini-lecture/animation entitled ‘The Chemical Structure of DNA’.
function and replication, and chromosome structure.
www.johnkyrk.com
John Kyrk’s website has excellent animations on DNA structure, DNA replication, transcription and
translation.
There are many resources to support topics in this chapter in this website from the Cold Spring
Harbor Laboratory, DNA from the Beginning. See the topics in the section Molecules of genetics.
