The Christmas Cycle
directs all things with divine wisdom and love. For this reason we may say with truth, “To them
that love God, all things work together unto good.” “O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is Thy
name in the whole earth!”
“To them that love God, all things work together unto good.” If this statement of the Apostle is
true, then it behooves us to surrender ourselves completely to the providence of our heavenly
Father. “He that findeth his life, shall lose it; and he that shall lose his life for Me, shall find it”
(Mt 10:39).
We may be sure, then, that God weighs, measures, and directs all the events of our life in
order that His plan of salvation for our soul may be fulfilled. How different life becomes for
the man who views everything in the light of faith! How bitter and hopeless life would be if
man were not persuaded that whatever happens to us is directed by the providence of a loving
Father who is seeking our salvation!
Would that we might submit ourselves to the providence of God as the children of
Bethlehem surrendered to Him! A child makes no plans for the future; it has no worries about
the conduct of its affairs, but looks to its father with complete confidence for the provision of
all the necessities of life. A child has no fear as long as its father lingers near; it is not anxious
about its welfare, but trusts its father completely. This, too, is the disposition we should cultivate
toward our heavenly Father. “Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings, O God, Thou
hast perfected praise” (Introit). “Suffer the little children to come unto Me, . . . for of such is the
kingdom of heaven” (Mk 10:14).
Prayer
O God, whose praise the martyred Innocents confessed this day, not by speech, but in their
death; mortify in us all the evils of vice, that Thy faith which our tongues profess, our lives also
may by their actions confess. Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
