Important: If a Web page icon has been added to the Web Site Designer (File -> Add New Page), but the page has not been created, you will be asked to create the page in the Create a Page dialog. You can choose to create an HTML or JSP page. Depending on what option is selected, the appropriate wizard will be displayed. When opened for editing, the default editor for the page is used. In this case of HTML and JSP pages, the default editor is the Page Designer. Using page templates Using page templates improves the efficiency of developing Web applications. You can alter an existing page template or create your own and then apply the page template to all of the Web pages in your Web site to ensure a consistent design. When editing the page template, you can use the free layout mode to make changes to the layout of each Web page. Instead of making a change (such as altering the size of the navigation bar) on each individual Web page, you can alter the page template instead. Then, you can apply that change to your entire Web site. Note: See 5.2, “Adding HTML pages to the Online Catalog sample” on page 135 for an example of using the Web Site Designer. Using the Site Parts drawer When working with pages, the Site Parts drawer in the Palette view is particularly useful. For the purpose of this discussion, we are going to categorize the areas in the Web Site Designer as: 1. Editor surface - The surface of the Web Site Designer where you add, delete, and modify page icons. 2. Unassociated page icon - A page icon that does not have a physical file (HTML or JSP) associated to it. 3. Associated page icon - A page icon that has a physical file associated to it. The table below lists (and describes) all the items of the context menu and groups them into the appropriate category.
