Follow these steps to create a new HTML or XHTML file: 1. Select File -> New -> HTML/XHTML File to launch the wizard. 2. Click Browse to select the appropriate location for the file. The folder that you choose should be under the WebContent folder of the Web project. If an HTML file that is included in a dynamic Web project is not stored under this folder, then it will not be included in the WAR file that is deployed to the server. In addition, link validation will not encompass files that are not under the WebContent folder. 3. Type a name for your new file. 4. Ensure that the appropriate HTML or XHTML option is displayed in the Markup Language drop-down list. 5. You have three options for proceeding: a. If you want to accept the defaults associated with a new HTML or XHTML file, leave the Model field as None and make sure the Configure advanced options is deselected. b. If you want to apply a page template to your new file, select Page Template in the Model field and click Next. i. If you want to use one of the sample templates provided, select Sample Page Template and then choose one of the templates shown in the Thumbnail box. 108 IBM WebSphere Application Server - Express V5.0.2 Developer Handbook
ii. If you want to use a template of your own, select User-defined Page Template and then click Browse to select the template from the file system. c. If you do not want to use a page template, but want to specify or customize the file options, select the Configure advanced options check box and click Next. i. If you want to select an encoding type, deselect the Use workbench encoding check box to select a new encoding attribute. Select the appropriate encoding value to add to the file's HTML declaration from the Encoding drop-down list. ii. The default is the value set in the HTML Files preferences page, which is accessed by selecting Window -> Preferences, and then expanding the Web and XML Files preferences. iii. Ensure that the proper content type is selected in the Content Type drop-down list. The default is text/html. iv. Select the Document Type that you wish to associate with the HTML or XHTML file. The default for an HTML file is HTML 4.01 Transitional, while the default for an XHTML file is XHTML 1.1. v. Specify a cascading style sheet (CSS) file to be referenced by the new HTML or XHTML file. Typically, CSS files are located in the theme folder under the WebContent folder. You can click Add to choose a style sheet from the file system. Choose Remove to delete a style sheet from the list, or use the arrow buttons to rearrange the order in which the file references the style sheets. If a style sheet is already associated with the project in which you are creating the new file, that style sheet is the default. 6. Click Finish to create the file in the project that you have selected. As a default, the new file opens in Page Designer, in the Design page. 5.1.5 Using Page templates Page templates provide a starting point for JSP and HTML pages. By selecting a template to use throughout the application, you ensure a consistent look and feel for the application. Using templates also makes maintenance of this look easy. A change to the template automatically updates all pages using that template. Studio Site Developer provides a page template library populated with a commonly used templates. You can use these as they are, modify them, or create your own templates. The Web page wizards, Page Designer, and Web Site Designer tools are especially designed to make using templates easy.
