Note: The Web perspective also contains the Servers view, the Server Configuration view, and the Console view. You may find it easier to work in the Web perspective when you are testing an application. 13.2.1 Setting preferences for the Server perspective There are preference settings that you may want to update once you start using the Server perspective. To define these preferences, do the following: 1. From the toolbar, select Window -> Preferences -> Server. 2. Expand the Server entry. Figure 13-3 Server preferences window The default options are shown in Figure 13-3. Among the options, we recommend paying attention to the following: – Automatically publish before starting servers Specifies that all the files should automatically be published before starting the server. 460 IBM WebSphere Application Server - Express V5.0.2 Developer Handbook
– Keep publishing dialog open after publishing Specifies that a monitor opens to display messages when files are published. This is helpful if you have a problem with publishing, but for the most part it is not necessary. – Automatically restart servers when necessary Specifies that Studio Site Developer can automatically restart the server when it detects that the server must be restarted to handle resource changes in the workspace. This setting is fine for the test environment, but you probably do not want this setting if other people will be using the server. – Prompt before making irreversible changes with an editor Specifies that the server tools will prompt you before you make a change in a editor that cannot be undone. – Save dirty editors before starting the server Determines whether to save editors with unsaved changes before starting the server. – Repair invalid servers Occasionally, the server configuration may become out of sync with existing conditions in the workspace. This usually happens when an EAR file has been modified or deleted so the information in the server configuration is incorrect. This is easily fixed by allowing Studio Site Developer to perform repairs but it is probably a good idea to select the Prompt option so you have a chance to decline the repairs. – Publishing method: Smart publish (select): Specifies that you only want to publish changed resources to the server. All resources that no longer exist in the workspace are deleted on the server. This is the default value. Prompt user: Specifies that you want to choose which resources to publish to the server or to remove from the server. Publish all: Specifies that you want to publish all resources to the server, regardless of whether they have changed. No resources are deleted from the server. 3.
