► Studio Site Developer Server tools
Developers who have control over an application server, whether it be in the
Studio Site Developer test environment, or a remote application server set up
for their use, will use the Server tools provided with Studio Site Developer,
including elements like the Server perspective, Servers view, and Console
view. The person managing and configuring the server is doing so from a
workstation with Studio Site Developer installed. Using the Server tools, you
can define servers, configure them, start and stop them, monitor their activity,
and publish applications to them. In addition, you have access to the
administrative console from the Server tools.
Important: As a general rule, an application server should only be
administered in one way. In other words, if you use the administrative console
to administer a server, do not also use the Server tools to administer it. Any
changes made by the administrative console will not be seen by the Server
tools and vice versa.
In this redbook, we will discuss using the Server tools to manage application
servers and deploy applications to them. Information about the administrative
console and commands can be found in the WebSphere Application Server -
Express V5.0.1 Administrator Handbook, SG24-6976.
13.1.2 Managing test application servers
Figure 13-1 on page 458 shows an application development scenario. In this
example, when WebSphere Application Server - Express was installed on the
development machine, the default install options were taken, meaning that both
Studio Site Developer (including the WebSphere test environment) and a
standalone Express Application Server were installed. In addition, Express
Application Server was installed on three remote systems to allow testing on
multiple platforms.
