The Head of ses Radio, Mr Tuong Quang Luu and the ses Radio 2EA Station<br />
Manager, Ma Sawsan Madina, announced today the appointment of the new<br />
Broadcaster/Journalist for the Kurdish language program on 2EA.<br />
Mr Chahln BAKER was appointed Head of Group (Broadcaster/Journatist Level<br />
Two). Chahin was born in Syria. He studied for three years in Austria and<br />
Germany before arriving in Australia in 1968. He holds a B.A. and a Dip. Ed.<br />
from Maoquarie University. Chahin Is employed by the NSW Department of<br />
School Education as a Consultant For Languages and Multiculturallssues and<br />
a Teacher of Arabic and German. He also speaks Turkish<br />
Chahln Is a well known Kurdish writer/joumallst. In addition to five books<br />
published abroad many of his short stories, poems and articles have been<br />
published in Kurdish literary magazines and newspapers throughout the world.<br />
He has also written many short stories, poems and articles in English, Arabic<br />
and German. He is the author of th~.artJcle on the Kurds In The Australian<br />
People, An Encyclopedio of ttJe Nation: Its People and Their Origins (1988). He<br />
has translated a number of stories from English and German Into Kurdish,<br />
Including Heinrich 'ersil's novel. The LOst Honour of Katharina Blum,<br />

Chahln has worked extensively with the Kurdish community in Australia and has<br />
participated in many conferences on Middle Eastern and Kurdish issues. He<br />
acted as an Interpr<strong>et</strong>er for two international conferences (<strong>Paris</strong>. 1989 and<br />
Stockholm, 1991). He presented a bilingual program, Kurdlsh/Engllsh, on 2SER<br />
FM in 1982183 and joined sas Radio in 1985 as the Co-ordinator/Broadcaster<br />
of the Kurdish Language Program.<br />
In congratulating Mr Baker on his appointment, Mr Luu highlighted the<br />
contribution that he would make in providing the Kurdish speaking community<br />
with the professional radio service they <strong>de</strong>serve.<br />
The appointment follows an open process of recruitment on merit. The positions<br />
were extensively advertised In both the print media and on SBS Radio. Those<br />
applicants short-listed were subsequenUy interviewed by an In<strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nt<br />
selection committee consisting of the Station Manager at ses Radio 2EA. a<br />
professional journalist who is a member of (AJA) MEAA and a Commonwealth<br />
Government Consultant.<br />
From 10 February 1992, as a result of the refonn of airtime allocations of ses<br />
Radio, the Kurdish Language program can be heard on Sundays at 11.30am.<br />
Usteners can tune in on 1386 KHz in Sydney and 1584 KHz tn Newcastle and<br />
1485 KHz ln Wollongong.<br />
