Born <strong>in</strong> the USA<br />

The United States p<strong>la</strong>ys a lead<strong>in</strong>g role <strong>in</strong> the trade of f<strong>in</strong>e<br />

w<strong>in</strong>es, for several reasons. First, it has long been the target<br />

market of the best w<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> the world, <strong>in</strong> particu<strong>la</strong>r with regard<br />

to Italian w<strong>in</strong>es, helped by the popu<strong>la</strong>rity of Italian food which<br />

is still the most appreciated <strong>in</strong> the US. America is also home to<br />

the world's most <strong>in</strong>fluential w<strong>in</strong>e critic, Robert Parker, who has<br />

<strong>in</strong>vented the rat<strong>in</strong>g system on a 100-po<strong>in</strong>t scale; with his new-<br />

sletter The W<strong>in</strong>e Advocate, he can have a significant effect on<br />

the economic performance of the reviewed w<strong>in</strong>e. Moreover, <strong>in</strong><br />

the United States, and California specifically, some of world’s<br />

most popu<strong>la</strong>r w<strong>in</strong>es are produced; they are produced <strong>in</strong> such<br />

small quantities that they become real 'cult w<strong>in</strong>es'. The first of<br />

them was Opus One, produced <strong>in</strong> Napa Valley <strong>in</strong> 1979 by the<br />

Mondavi-Rothschild family. Today the most famous w<strong>in</strong>es are<br />

the unobta<strong>in</strong>able Scream<strong>in</strong>g Eagle, produced <strong>in</strong> about 500<br />

cases a year, a bottle of which can reach the price of 3000<br />

euros, and other w<strong>in</strong>es such as S<strong>in</strong>e Qua Non, Abreu, or<br />

Har<strong>la</strong>n Estate V<strong>in</strong>eyard Shrader, to name a few. Good times<br />

spent dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g fantastic w<strong>in</strong>es made <strong>in</strong> the USA with friends<br />

are still etched on my memory. Perhaps my favorite w<strong>in</strong>e has<br />

been an opulent and fantastic Har<strong>la</strong>n Proprietary 1997, but<br />

how could I forget the fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon Araujo<br />

1997 drunk dur<strong>in</strong>g an unforgettable d<strong>in</strong>ner at P<strong>in</strong>chiorri re-<br />

staurant <strong>in</strong> Florence, on a cold January even<strong>in</strong>g this year? That<br />

was an impressive w<strong>in</strong>e. Just to let you understand how much,<br />

let me tell you that I was compar<strong>in</strong>g it with other w<strong>in</strong>es such as<br />

Krug 1995, Cristal 1985, Yquem 1997, P<strong>in</strong>gus 1996 and<br />

Cheval B<strong>la</strong>nc 1982. If you have the chance, try it.<br />

Gli Stati Uniti rivestono un ruolo di primo piano nel commercio mondiale<br />

dei v<strong>in</strong>i pregiati, per diversi motivi.<br />

Per prima cosa, sono da tempo il mercato di riferimento dei migliori<br />

v<strong>in</strong>i del mondo, <strong>in</strong> partico<strong>la</strong>re per quanto riguarda i v<strong>in</strong>i italiani favoriti<br />

da una diffusa ristorazione nostrana che rimane <strong>la</strong> più apprezzata<br />

dal popolo ‘yankee’.<br />

L’America è poi <strong>la</strong> patria del più <strong>in</strong>fluente critico mondiale, Robert<br />

Parker, <strong>in</strong>ventore del punteggio espresso <strong>in</strong> centesimi, che con <strong>la</strong> sua<br />

<strong>rivista</strong> W<strong>in</strong>e Advocate è <strong>in</strong> grado di decretare <strong>la</strong> fortuna di un v<strong>in</strong>o.<br />

Negli Stati Uniti <strong>in</strong>oltre, <strong>in</strong> California nello specifico, si producono alcuni<br />

dei più ricercati v<strong>in</strong>i al mondo, prodotti <strong>in</strong> quantità talmente esigua<br />

da renderli dei veri ‘cult w<strong>in</strong>es’.<br />

Il capostipite fu Opus One, prodotto <strong>in</strong> Napa Valley dal 1979 dalle famiglie<br />

Mondavi-Rothschild.<br />

Oggi gli astri del mercato sono l’<strong>in</strong>trovabile Scream<strong>in</strong>g Eagle, prodotto<br />

<strong>in</strong> circa 500 casse all’anno ed una cui bottiglia può raggiungere quotazioni<br />

di 3000 euro, oppure i v<strong>in</strong>i di S<strong>in</strong>e Qua Non, Abreu, Har<strong>la</strong>n<br />

Estate o Shrader V<strong>in</strong>eyard, solo per citarne alcuni.<br />

Ho ancora impresse nel<strong>la</strong> mia memoria fantastiche bevute di v<strong>in</strong>i<br />

made <strong>in</strong> Usa, condivise con amici veri.<br />

Su tutti forse il mio preferito è stato un opulento e spettaco<strong>la</strong>re<br />

Har<strong>la</strong>n Proprietary 1997, ma come dimenticare il fantastico Cabernet<br />

Sauvignon Araujo 1997 bevuto durante un’<strong>in</strong>dimenticabile cena a<br />

Firenze da P<strong>in</strong>chiorri, <strong>in</strong> una fredda sera di gennaio di quest’anno?<br />

V<strong>in</strong>o impressionante.<br />

E vi dico solo al suo fianco c’erano v<strong>in</strong>i come Krug 1995, Cristal 1985,<br />

Yquem 1997, P<strong>in</strong>gus 1996 e Cheval B<strong>la</strong>nc 1982.<br />
