The United States plays a leading role in the trade of fine
wines, for several reasons. First, it has long been the target
market of the best wines in the world, in particular with regard
to Italian wines, helped by the popularity of Italian food which
is still the most appreciated in the US. America is also home to
the world's most influential wine critic, Robert Parker, who has
invented the rating system on a 100-point scale; with his new-
sletter The Wine Advocate, he can have a significant effect on
the economic performance of the reviewed wine. Moreover, in
the United States, and California specifically, some of world’s
most popular wines are produced; they are produced in such
small quantities that they become real 'cult wines'. The first of
them was Opus One, produced in Napa Valley in 1979 by the
Mondavi-Rothschild family. Today the most famous wines are
the unobtainable Screaming Eagle, produced in about 500
cases a year, a bottle of which can reach the price of 3000
euros, and other wines such as Sine Qua Non, Abreu, or
Harlan Estate Vineyard Shrader, to name a few. Good times
spent drinking fantastic wines made in the USA with friends
are still etched on my memory. Perhaps my favorite wine has
been an opulent and fantastic Harlan Proprietary 1997, but
how could I forget the fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon Araujo
1997 drunk during an unforgettable dinner at Pinchiorri re-
staurant in Florence, on a cold January evening this year? That
was an impressive wine. Just to let you understand how much,
let me tell you that I was comparing it with other wines such as
Krug 1995, Cristal 1985, Yquem 1997, Pingus 1996 and
Cheval Blanc 1982. If you have the chance, try it.
Gli Stati Uniti rivestono un ruolo di primo piano nel commercio mondiale
dei vini pregiati, per diversi motivi.
Per prima cosa, sono da tempo il mercato di riferimento dei migliori
vini del mondo, in particolare per quanto riguarda i vini italiani favoriti
da una diffusa ristorazione nostrana che rimane la più apprezzata
dal popolo ‘yankee’.
L’America è poi la patria del più influente critico mondiale, Robert
Parker, inventore del punteggio espresso in centesimi, che con la sua
rivista Wine Advocate è in grado di decretare la fortuna di un vino.
Negli Stati Uniti inoltre, in California nello specifico, si producono alcuni
dei più ricercati vini al mondo, prodotti in quantità talmente esigua
da renderli dei veri ‘cult wines’.
Il capostipite fu Opus One, prodotto in Napa Valley dal 1979 dalle famiglie
Mondavi-Rothschild.
Oggi gli astri del mercato sono l’introvabile Screaming Eagle, prodotto
in circa 500 casse all’anno ed una cui bottiglia può raggiungere quotazioni
di 3000 euro, oppure i vini di Sine Qua Non, Abreu, Harlan
Estate o Shrader Vineyard, solo per citarne alcuni.
Ho ancora impresse nella mia memoria fantastiche bevute di vini
made in Usa, condivise con amici veri.
Su tutti forse il mio preferito è stato un opulento e spettacolare
Harlan Proprietary 1997, ma come dimenticare il fantastico Cabernet
Sauvignon Araujo 1997 bevuto durante un’indimenticabile cena a
Firenze da Pinchiorri, in una fredda sera di gennaio di quest’anno?
Vino impressionante.
E vi dico solo al suo fianco c’erano vini come Krug 1995, Cristal 1985,
Yquem 1997, Pingus 1996 e Cheval Blanc 1982.
