The career of Daniel Craig started along with the beginning
of a new phase of Bond adventures.
When Michael J. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli noticed this
actor until then known, but not yet famous, they thought
that they needed to maintain continuity with the Brosanan
age. They really could not choose a more different actor
compared to the Irishman who had brought enthusiasm
back among 007 fans, after the still period that followed the
two films with Dalton.
Pierce Brosnan had rendered like no other the elegance and
regality of Bond’s movements and attitudes.
The hero could count on the help of Lindy Hemming and the
Italian fashion house Brioni. They both played decisive roles
in this phase.
Both also played a decisive role with Daniel Craig, but the
results were very different.
A right approach must obviously take into account the actor,
who seems to feel uncomfortable dressing in haute couture.
Craig expresses other aspects of Bond, but not his elegance
and good posture.
In Casino Royale, we see him for the first time wearing a suit
and tie on the train, in Montenegro, and the first impression,
after all, is not that bad: dark suit, striped white shirt. Earlier,
arriving at the Bahamas, Craig wears a suit made of gray
light linen. The peak lapels, typically used in double-breasted
suits, make it different from the classic ones. Trousers are a
bit larger than usual. For this film, Brioni realized a beautiful
tuxedo, perfectly suiting Craig in the scene of the poker
table, where all the players wear Brioni tuxedos.
Our hero takes his leave in a three-piece pinstripe suit and
blue shirt, which also are the parting of Brioni and
Hemming. Thank you both. In Quantum of Solace, Tom Ford
is more casually elegant, wearing tightest suits with more
modern details, despite the designer has always been faithful
to the most classic rules of Savile Row. The midnight blue tuxedo
and the tie with side tips or shawl collar are other features
of the look, along with the brown mohair suit that allows
him to survive even in warm climates such as the

L’avvento di Daniel Craig coincide con l’avvio di una nuova fase della
saga bondiana. Quando Michael J. Wilson e Barbara Broccoli individuarono
questo attore fino ad allora conosciuto, ma non ancora celebre,
pensarono che rispetto all’era Brosnan occorresse una soluzione
di continuità. E davvero non potevano scegliere un interprete più diverso
dall’irlandese che aveva riportato entusiasmo tra i fan di 007,
dopo l’opaco periodo contrassegnato da una lunga pausa seguita ai
due film con Dalton.
Pierce Brosnan aveva impersonato come nessuno l’eleganza bondiana
e una certa regalità di movimenti e atteggiamenti. L’eroe in smoking
poteva contare sull’aiuto di Lindy Hemming e della casa italiana di alta
moda Brioni. L’una e l’altra ebbero ruoli decisivi in questa fase.
Entrambe accompagnarono sul set anche Daniel Craig, ma i risultati
furono assai diversi. L’approccio deve evidentemente tener conto del
personaggio, che si muove con scarsa disinvoltura in abiti di alta sartoria.
Craig esprime bene altri aspetti della poliedricità bondiana, ma
quello dell’eleganza e del portamento sembrano essergli estranei.
In Casino Royal, lo vediamo per la prima volta in giacca e cravatta in
treno, in Montenegro, e la prima impressione, tutto sommato, non dispiace.
Abito scuro, camicia bianca a righe. Ancora prima, all’arrivo
nelle Bahamas, Craig indossa un abito in lino grigio chiaro. I revers a
punta, solitamente utilizzati in abiti doppiopetto, lasciano intravvedere
qualche elemento ribelle rispetto al classico. Le gambe sono un po’
più larghe rispetto al solito. In questa pellicola Brioni un assolo se lo
regala con uno splendido smoking, che Craig indossa come un guanto,
e nella scena collettiva al tavolo da poker. Qui tutti i giocatori indossano
smoking Brioni, con chicche esotiche da manuale della moda.
Il nostro eroe si congeda in un gessato tre pezzi e camicia celeste. E
sarà anche il commiato di Brioni e della Hemming. Grazie a entrambi.
In Quantum of Solace arriva Tom Ford e un’eleganza un po’ più “sbarazzina”,
nonostante lo stilista abbia a più riprese fatto professione di
fede ai dettami più classici di Savile Row. Abiti più stretti e con qualche
particolare che permette di definire un’adesione più convinta alla modernità.
Non manca lo smoking blu notte e anche qui, come il cravattino
con punte laterali o il collo a scialle piuttosto che a lancia, particolari
di novità. Tra gli abiti, da segnalare quello marrone in mohair, tessuto
che permette di sopravvivere anche a climi caldi come quello boliviano.
