158 Picasso and Miles Davis. For his campaign, Ron English chose the serial killer Charles Manson, who looked wide-eyed passers-by from the top of the billboard. New World Order is a poster of 1991 when Ron English overlaps the words used by President Bush to talk about the Gulf War to a very personal reworking of Picasso’s Guernica, entirely populated by Walt Disney characters. This first version of the poster has been followed by several others on canvas, like the Red Baron vs. Peanuts, in which Snoopy lands on a threedimensional version of the work by the Spanish artist populated by the other characters of the comic. It does it on an airplane whose colors refer symbolically to those of the Fascist Legionary Air Force. In addition to Guernica, Ron English has worked on many other famous works of art, such as the Scream by Munch, the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci and the Déjeuner sur l’Herbe by Manet, where the characters are Charlie Brown, Lucy Van Pelt and Sally Peanuts. On his canvases, the artist captured not only reworked American art history works, but also icons and myths of American culture from the mid-1920’s to the present day: from Marilyn Monroe and Ronald Mc Donald to Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, the clown of the American fast food chain, Superman, the Kiss, Elvis and the Teletubbies. His children are one of his favorite subjects, to whom Ron English has dedicated the project Son of Pop - Ron English paints his progeny. A questa prima versione su poster, ne sono seguite numerose altre su tela, come Red Baron vs. Peanuts, in cui Snoopy atterra sulla versione tridimensionale dell’opera dell’artista spagnolo popolata dagli altri personaggi del fumetto. E lo fa a bordo di un aereo i cui colori rimandano simbolicamente a quelli dell’Aviazione Legionaria Fascista. Oltre a Guernica Ron English interverrà su numerose altre celebri opere d’arte, dall’Urlo di Munch, al Cenacolo di Leonardo, al Déjeuner sur l’Erbe di Manet, dove i protagonisti saranno Charlie Brown, Lucy Van Pelt e Sally dei Peanuts. Sulle sue tele l’artista americano immortala non solo opere di storia dell’arte rielaborate, ma anche icone e miti della cultura americana dalla metà del Novecento ai giorni nostri: da Marilyn Monroe, a Topolino, da Bugs Bunny a Ronald Mc Donald, il clown della catena di fast food statunitense, da Superman ai Kiss, da Elvis ai Teletubbies. Soggetti prediletti dell’artista i suoi figli, a cui Ron English ha dedicato il progetto Son of Pop – Ron English paints his progeny (Figlio del Pop – Ron English dipinge la sua progenie). In questa serie di opere pur mantenendone la fisionomia, l’artista trasforma i suoi figli Mars e Zephyr in una serie di personaggi della cultura pop contemporanea, da Andy Warhol, a Batman e Robin, a Gene Simmons, la voce dei
suoi amati Kiss. Oltre al lavoro sui manifesti pubblicitari e alla sua produzione artistica, Ron English ha anche firmato numerose copertine di album musicali, tra cui Welcome to the Monkey House dei Dandy Warhols. Tra i suoi lavori anche un ciclo di film girati in 8 millimetri all’inizio della sua carriera, decine di fotografie in bianco e nero, a cui si aggiungono installazioni e una serie di cd in cui Ron English, oltre a firmare gli artwork è anche autore dei testi delle canzoni. Da Songs in English in cui l’artista collabora con il songwriter Jack Medicine, a The Revelation Book pensato, scritto e prodotto da Ron English insieme a una serie di musicisti tra cui il cantautore Daniel Johnston. Seguiranno English 101, Hyperjinx Tricycle e Popaganda. Ron English è anche cinema: costruito interamente su di lui e sul suo lavoro il documentario pluripremiato POPaganda, the Art and Crimes of Ron English (POPaganda, l’arte e i crimini di Ron English). Una selezione di suoi dipinti sono stati inclusi anche nel film di Morgan Spurlock Supersize Me. Prevista per gli ultimi mesi del 2009 l’uscita del film Abraham Obama, un mediometraggio firmato dal regista Kevin Chapados, in cui è ricostruito il progetto di affissioni di Ron English, che ha coperto i muri degli States con un immagine ottenuta dalla fusione tra il sedicesimo Presidente americano Abraham Lincoln e l’attuale premier Barack Obama. His works include a series of films shot in 8 mm at the beginning of his career, dozens of black and white photographs, art installations and a series of CDs in which Ron English is author of both artworks and lyrics. Examples are Songs in English, in collaboration with the songwriter Jack Medicine and The Revelation Book, created, written and produced by Ron English along with musicians such as singersongwriter Daniel Johnston; others are English 101, Hyperjinx Tricycle and Popaganda. The award-winning documentary Popaganda, the Art and Crimes of Ron English is built entirely on the author and his work. A selection of his paintings were included in the film Spurlock Supersize Me by Morgan. The film Abraham Obama released in 2009 is a medium-length film produced by the director Kevin Chapados, which tells the realization of the Ron English’s project to cover the walls of the States with an image obtained from the merger of the sixteenth US President Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama. The film is currently touring film festivals. The latest work by Ron is another "mash-up" of Barack Obama, this time pictured as a modern Hulk, and the title could not have been clearer "America's back!" 159
