Fleming.
Di fatto la SPECTRE è nata intorno al 1958, quando l'autore lavorava
con lo sceneggiatore Jack Whittingham e il produttore Kevin McClory
a un copione cinematografico originale.
McClory non riuscì a raccogliere fondi sufficienti per il film e Fleming
trasformò il progetto nel romanzo «Thunderball».
Con una certa ingenuità, senza chiedere un permesso scritto ai co-autori
del soggetto. Sicché McClory gli fece causa: Fleming dovette accreditare
lui e Whittingham nel libro e dividere con McClory i diritti
cinematografici.
«Thunderball» doveva essere il primo film di 007 della EON, creata
nel 1960 dai produttori Harry Saltzman e Albert R. Broccoli; lo sceneggiatore
Richard Maibaum è già al lavoro sull'adattamento, ma il
progetto deve aspettare chiarimenti sulla proprietà del copyright.
Da «Licenza di uccidere» (1962), tutti i cattivi dei film di 007 tranne
Goldfinger sono legati alla SPECTRE, il cui Numero 1 appare in
«Dalla Russia con amore» (1963), «Thunderball» (1965, co-prodotto
da McClory), «Si vive solo due volte» (1967), «Al servizio segreto
di Sua Maestà» (1969) e «Una cascata di diamanti» (1971). La parziale
proprietà di McClory impedirà ulteriori apparizioni della SPECTRE
e di Blofeld: questi nel 1977 sarà sostituito da Stromberg ne «La spia
che mi amava» e nel 1981 sarà ucciso nella sequenza di apertura di
«Solo per i tuoi occhi» senza essere chiamato per nome. Intanto
McClory riprende la SPECTRE nel film rivale «Mai dire mai» (1983) e
in altri due script irrealizzati – «Warhead» (1976) e «Warhead
2000» (1996), tutti basati su «Thunderball» – finché la EON non
vince una battaglia legale contro di lui nel 2001.
Una nuova SPECTRE rivive nei libri di John Gardner «Per servizi speciali»,
«Ruolo d'onore» e «Nessuno vive per sempre», mentre Irma
Bunt, alleata di Blofeld, muore nel romanzo breve «La morte viene
dal passato» di Raymond Benson.

survives, but suffers from amnesia, which will lead to the events
at the beginning of Fleming's posthumous novel «The Man with
the Golden Gun». Actually, SPECTRE was conceived around
1958 when Fleming was working with screenwriter Jack
Whittingham and producer Kevin McClory on an original 007
film script. But McClory was not able to raise money enough and
Fleming turned the project into the novel «Thunderball». Quite
naively, without asking a written permission to the co-authors of
the script. So McClory sued Fleming, which was forced to credit
him and Whittingham in the book, and share film rights with
McClory. «Thunderball» should be the first Bond movie produced
by EON, created in 1960 by producers Harry Saltzman and
Albert R. Broccoli; screenwriter Richard Maibaum is already
working on the adaptation; but the project has to wait till everything
is clear about copyright owners. Since «Dr. No» in 1962,
all bad guys in the film series (with the exception of Goldfinger)
are linked to SPECTRE, whose Number One appears in «From
Russia with Love» (1963), «Thunderball» (1965, co-produced by
McClory), «You Only Live Twice» (1967), «On Her Majesty's
Secret Service» (1969) and «Diamonds Are Forever» (1971).
Partial ownership by McClory will prevent further appearances
by SPECTRE and Blofeld: in 1977 Blofeld will be replaced by
Stromberg in «The Spy Who Loved Me» and in 1981 he will be
killed at last in the opening sequence of «For Your Eyes Only»
without being mentioned by name. Meanwhile McClory brings
SPECTRE back in the rival movie «Never Say Never Again»
(1983) and two other unfilmed scripts – «Warhead» (1976) and
«Warhead 2000» (1996), all based on «Thunderball» – till
EON finally wins a legal battle against him in 2001. A new SPEC-
TRE was revived by writer John Gardner in «For Special
Services», «Role of Honour» and «Nobody Lives Forever», while
Blofeld's ally Irma Bunt was killed in Raymond Benson's novelette
«Blast from the Past». Will SPECTRE return?
