E come ci sei riuscito?
Stavo frequentando un corso sull’high concept, termine coniato da
Spielberg per definire un film che può essere descritto in 25 parole e
che proprio per la sua immediatezza ha tutte le carte in regola per diventare
un successo commerciale. A me ne sono venute in mente tre
“dwarfs playing basketball”… E’ nata così l’idea per il film The Minis…
nani a canestro, che parla della storia di Roger e Chevy, due ragazzi affetti
da nanismo che vogliono formare una squadra di pallacanestro
per partecipare ad un torneo. Grazie alla loro determinazione riescono
addirittura a coinvolgere uno dei giocatori più forti di tutti i tempi:
Dennis Rodman!
The Minis è un film che parla di sogni.
Esiste un parallelismo tra la storia dei nani con il sogno di giocare a basket
e la storia di Valerio che voleva diventare “grande” nel mondo
del cinema?
Certo. In un certo senso anch’io ero un nano che voleva diventare
grande, perché grandi non si nasce, si diventa. Raggiungere l’impossibile
era una sfida soprattutto con me stesso e, come i Minis, dovevo
superare tanti ostacoli per poter vincere e trionfare. In America, grazie
alla mia passione e alla mia perseveranza, ho avuto la possibilità di
conoscere nomi importanti del cinema come Oliver Stone, Jim
And how did you make it?
I was attending a course on high concept screenwriting, a term
coined by Steven Spielberg to define a movie that can be described
in more or less 25 words and which, for this reason, meets
all the requirements to become a commercial success. Just
three words came to my mind: “dwarves playing basketball”.
That’s how the idea for The Minis was born: it tells the story of
two boys, Rogen and Chevy, suffering from dwarfism, who want
to build a basketball team in order to take part in a tournament.
Thanks to their persistence, they succeed in involving even
one of the greatest players of all time: Dennis Rodman!
The Minis deals with dreams. Is there any parallelism between
the story of these little men dreaming about playing basketball,
and the story of Valerio, who wanted to become “big” in the
world of cinema?
Of Course. In a way, I too was a little man who wanted to become
big: you aren’t born big, you choose to become big. I wanted
to challenge myself to reach the impossible, and, like the Minis,
I had to clear a lot of hurdles to be a winner. Thanks to my passion
and persistence, in the US I had the chance to meet many
important people in the cinema industry, like Oliver Stone,
