James Bond, un punto
di riferimento
per cinema e fans
James Bond has proved to be a source of inspiration for
films. Catch Me If You Can is a film released in 2002 by
Steven Spielberg starring Leonardo DiCaprio; it is the
story of a clever teenage conman that, at some point, is
seen in a tailor’s shop buying a tailored suit.
This is a normal scene, yet the suit that DiCaprio is trying
on is incredibly similar to the one worn by Sean Connery
in Goldfinger (1964), that light gray waistcoat and black
tie. Any doubts left disappear as soon as the tailor says
to DiCaprio "Now you need only one of those sporting
cars he drives"; in the next scene, DiCaprio is driving a
beautiful Aston Martin DB5 of 1964, and this is even
accompanied by the music theme of James Bond.
Thus, we may reckon that Spielberg wanted to pay
homage to the myth of James Bond.
The audience smiles and has fun in front of this kind of
homage because the director expresses an admiration
that is first his own and then that of public; Spielberg
knows how this works and the character played by
DiCaprio becomes even more interesting, even though it
is a conman that cannot be associated with Bond: he's
nice, smart, does not hurt anyone, and last but not least
would like to be like James Bond.
In Dr. No (1962), the first James Bond film, Bond sits
facing backwards at a table in a casino with a beautiful
girl to whom he presents himself (this time facing
forward, smoking a cigarette in the corner of the mouth
and wearing a perfect tuxedo) with the world's most
famous line "Bond, James Bond". From this moment it is
impossible not to love him, not to try (even only once) to
be like him. In the movie The Recruit (2003), Al Pacino,
a CIA spies trainer, explains to a student how to move
during missions; the student (Colin Farrell) says "Well ...
we must be like 007".
In the film Lost in Translation (2003), the protagonist Bill
Murray is shooting a commercial and he wears a tuxedo
, when the director asks him to act like 007;
James Bond, a reference point for films and fans
by Enzo Latronico
in senso stretto.
