In 1961 Ian Fleming publishes «Thunderball», a Bond novel
which brings the character into a new world. While the main
superpowers are apparently trying to defreeze the Cold War,
an international organization called SPECTRE is challenging
them, with no ideological attachment. The acronym stands for
Special Executive for Counteritelligence, Terrorism, Revenge
and Extortion and the organization recruits former members
of various criminal groups all over the world, including the
Italian Mafia and the Union Corse, as well as the deadliest elements
from SMERSH, the top secret branch of the Russian
KGB, which has been officially closed down (well, not really,
just officially). The author's intention, as declared in a
«Playboy» interview, is avoiding the cliché of Russians as «the
bad guys»: you can't see one whole people as evil. With SPEC-
TRE, Fleming actually foresees a new frontier of organized
crime, mixing illegal activities and business (as it is with Mafia
in Italy and the United States), terrorism and finance (as it will
happen with Al Qaeda, though this organization will retain a
religious/ideological alibi), espionage and money (as it is today
in a world dominated by international corporations). SPECTRE
will be imitated a thousand times in literature and films, but
Fleming's idea is quite ahead of his time. In its first appearance,
the organization steals two NATO nuclear bombs, threatening
to detonate them unless a huge sum is paid, but 007 follows
the trail to the Bahamas and SPECTRE's Number 2,
Emilio Largo. Bond faces Number 1, Ernest Stavro Blofeld, in
two novels after «Thunderball».In «On Her Majesty's Secret
Service» (1963) they meet on Piz Gloria, Switzerland, where
SPECTRE is preparing a new blackmail by using biological weapons;
Blofeld is defeated, but has his revenge by killing Bond's
wife Tracy shortly after their marriage. In «You Only Live
Twice» (1964) an emotionally wrecked Bond finds Blofeld's hideaway
in Japan: in the final confrontation kills his enemy and

Nel 1961 Ian Fleming pubblica «Thunderball», un romanzo che proietta
James Bond in un nuovo mondo.
Mentre le superpotenze cercano in apparenza di sbrinare la Guerra
Fredda, devono fare i conti con la SPECTRE, organizzazione internazionale
priva di basi ideologiche.
L'acronimo sta per Speciale Esecutivo per Controspionaggio,
Terrorismo, Rappresaglie ed Estorsioni, e l'organizzazione recluta ex
membri dalla Mafia italiana e dall'Unione Corsa, così come gli elementi
più letali della SMERSH, sezione segretissima del KGB russo, ufficialmente
chiusa (be', non proprio, solo ufficialmente).
L'intenzione dell'autore, dichiarata in una sua intervista a «Playboy»,
è di evitare il cliché dei russi cattivi: non si può vedere un intero popolo
come malvagio.
Con la SPECTRE, Fleming prefigura una nuova frontiera del crimine
organizzato, che mescola attività illegali e affari (come già succede con
la Mafia in Italia e USA), terrorismo e finanza (come avverrà con Al
Qaeda, benché questa organizzazione mantenga un alibi religioso /
ideologico), spionaggio e denaro (com'è oggi in un mondo dominato
dalle multinazionali).
La SPECTRE sarà imitata mille volte nella letteratura e nel cinema, ma
l'idea di Fleming è molto innovativa.
Alla sua comparsa, l'organizzazione ruba due bombe nucleari NATO
e minaccia di farle esplodere se non sarà pagata un'enorme somma,
ma 007 segue la pista fino alle Bahamas e al Numero 2 della SPEC-
TRE, Emilio Largo. Bond affronta il Numero 1, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, in
due romanzi dopo «Thunderball-Operazione Tuono».
In «Al servizio segreto di Sua Maestà» (1963) si incontrano sul Piz
Gloria, Svizzera, dove la SPECTRE prepara un nuovo ricatto mediante
armi biologiche; Blofeld è sconfitto, ma si vendica uccidendo la moglie
di Bond, Tracy, poco dopo il loro matrimonio.
In «Si vive solo due volte» (1964) un Bond emotivamente a pezzi
trova il nascondiglio di Blofeld in Giappone: nel confronto finale uccide
il nemico e si salva, ma soffre di un'amnesia che porterà agli eventi
