I have long known Mario De Biasi’s wonderful pictures. I
had the opportunity to meet him in the office of Carla
Tolomeo, one of his closest friends, to whom De Biasi has
dedicated a wonderful reportage.
If one wonders about Mario’s age, I could say he is forever
young, always up-to-date and able to innovate over time.
His pictures have described and still describe the history of
a century, through its lights, shades, beauty and cruelty.
Always involved but at the same time unobtrusive, since
the lens is the real protagonist, he has documented the
rage of desperate people in Budapest, the monsoon in
Asia, women’s smile in the world. A lot remember the
atrocious pictures of the revolt in Hungary, of the soldier
hunted down like a beast by the crowd. Strength and
lucidity are necessary to take such a detailed sequence of
pictures, showing the darkest side of human soul.
Let’s now think about the pictures from the 50s: the city
reflected in a puddle after a storm, the lights of
skyscrapers, the 42nd Street, Central Park, black people
smiling from the front steps of their houses, symbol of a
conquered dignity.
The Big Apple had never been portrayed this way.
De Biasi exhibited at the Guggenheim in New York during
the exhibition “The Italian Metamorphosis”, where his
pictures were chosen to advertise the exhibition itself.
In 1994, Mario persuaded the queen of the Italian circus,
Moira Orfei, then young and little known, to walk in front
of men in a figure-hugging dress.
Da sempre conosco Mario De Biasi attraverso le sue straordinarie immagini,
ma l’occasione per un incontro vis à vis è scattata nello studio
di una sua grande amica alla quale De Biasi ha dedicato uno straordinario
reportage. Si tratta di Carla Tolomeo e nel suo studio ho avuto
il piacere di abbracciare il mitico giovanissimo sempre attuale Mario
De Biasi.
Sull’età di Mario nessuno può avanzare dubbi: è nato ieri, e oggi già si
sta rinnovando per rinascere questa sera o domani.
La sua fotografia ha raccontato e racconta la storia di un’epoca, attraverso
le sue luci, le sue ombre, la sua bellezza è le sue crudeltà.
Sempre coinvolto e allo stesso tempo distaccato, perché il protagonista
è l’obbiettivo che inesorabile segue la furia dei disperati a
Budapest, il monsone in Asia, il sorriso delle donne in giro per il
mondo. Ricordiamo le atroci immagini della rivolta in Ungheria, del
militare braccato come un animale e la folla che si scatena nel linciaggio,
bisogna essere lucidi e forti per regalare al mondo una sequenza
così forte e dettagliata degli animi più scuri del animo umano.
Andiamo alle immagini degli anni Cinquanta: la città che si riflette in
una pozza d’acqua dopo un temporale, le mille luci delle towers, la
42° strada, Central Park, i neri che sorridono seduti sugli scalini delle
loro case, a simboleggiare una conquistata dignità. Narra le notti newyorkesi,
vissute per le strade, nei bar, nei parchi.
Mai la grande mela è stata raccontata così.
Ha esposto al Guggenheim di New York durante la mostra “The
Italian Metamorphosis” dove la sua incredibile fotografia è stata scelta
come manifesto ufficiale dell’evento.
