Bond is incurably an individualist, a solitary hero.
His colleagues are just in the background of his adventures.
However, his actions are justified by his work as Royal Naval
Reserve Commander for one of the most famous secret
services in the world: the British Secret Intelligence Service
(SIS), also known as MI6 (Military Intelligence, Section 6).
Bond receives from the head of SIS missions that
are almost impossible to accomplish and the
necessary cover and equipment.
Thus, I think it is important to give you more information on
the agent’s “employer”.
The service began as the foreign section of the Secret Service
Bureau, which was founded in 1909 to control secret
intelligence operations overseas.
Its founder and first director was Royal Navy Captain Sir
George Mansfield Smith-Cumming, code name C (the first
letter of his surname). He typically signed correspondence
with his initial C in green ink. This usage has been adopted by
all subsequent directors of SIS who kept on signing documents
with the same green C. The MI6 logo features a brain,
symbol of intellective faculties, surrounded by a green C and
surmounted by the royal crown.
The motto 'Semper Occultus' at the bottom refers to the
ethos and the modus operandi of the Secret Intelligence
Service. In 1922, the section consolidated and
became a separate service.
The Special Operations Executive (SOE), specialised in
sabotage and subversion, was established in 1940 from the
then Section D of SIS and was reabsorbed into SIS after the
War. In 1944, with the passing of the Intelligence Services
Act, SIS was placed on a statutory footing under the Foreign
& Commonwealth Secretary, defining the functions of the
Service and the responsibilities of its Chief.
The Service's principal role is the production of secret
intelligence in support of Her Majesty's Government's
security, defence, foreign and economic policies.
SIS is known internally as "The Firm" and is based
at 85 Albert Embankment, Vauxhall Cross in London,
the building that also appears in the most recent 007 films.

Bond è un inguaribile individualista, un eroe solitario. I vari colleghi e
agenti di contatto sono solo tappezzeria all’interno delle sue avventure.
Tuttavia, le prerogative e l’operato di 007 trovano legittimazione
nel proprio inquadramento da ufficiale di Marina in una delle organizzazioni
spionistiche più famose al mondo: il Secret Intelligence
Service (SIS), ovvero il servizio segreto britannico, meglio noto come
MI6 (Military Intelligence Sezione 6). E’ dai vertici di questa struttura
che riceve incarichi ai limiti del possibile, coperture ed equipaggiamento
tecnologico necessario a portare a termine le missioni.
Ritengo, perciò, doveroso fornire qualche cenno storico sul datore di
lavoro del nostro agente. Il SIS nasce nel 1909 come Sezione Esteri
del Secret Service Bureau e si occupa della raccolta d’informazioni di
carattere strategico al di fuori dei confini nazionali. Al timone dell’MI6,
in qualità di fondatore e primo direttore, figura il capitano della Royal
Navy Sir George Mansfield Smith-Cumming, nome in codice C (dall’iniziale
del suo cognome). Cumming era solito firmare i documenti
tracciando una C con dell’inchiostro verde. La consuetudine diverrà
tradizione per tutti i direttori successivi, che continuarono a siglare le
carte con una C dello stesso colore. Lo stemma medesimo del servizio
è composto di un cervello, simbolo di potere intellettivo, circoscritto
da una grande lettera C di colore verde e sormontato dalla corona
reale. Alla base del logo, il motto araldico “Semper Occultus”
esplicita in maniera netta finalità e modus operandi. Nel 1922, la
Sezione si consolida e diviene un organismo completamente autonomo.
Nel 1940, dalla sezione D del SIS si originerà lo Special
Operation Executive (SOE), dedito al sabotaggio e sovversione,
branca riassorbita nuovamente nel SIS nell’immediato dopoguerra.
Nel 1994, sarà emanato l’Intelligence Services Act, atto legislativo che
porrà il SIS alle dipendenze del Foreign & Commonwealth Secretary
(Ministero degli Esteri e Commonwealth britannico), sancendone la
delicata funzione di supporto alla sicurezza del governo di Sua
Maestà, alla difesa del Regno, agli affari esteri e all’indirizzo della politica
economica.
Gli operatori del SIS amano riferirsi all’agenzia col più familiare termine
di The Firm (La Ditta). Il caratteristico edificio che oggi accoglie gli
uffici dell’MI6, molte volte immortalato nelle pellicole più recenti di
007, è effettivamente situato al numero 85 dell’Albert Embankment,
