pubblicitario, spiega Ron English - Sono circondato da mascotte<br />

aziendali che governano il pianeta. Onnipresenti eppure <strong>in</strong>toccabili”.<br />

E’ questo che dal<strong>la</strong> metà anni Ottanta sp<strong>in</strong>gerà l’artista a <strong>in</strong>tervenire<br />

sovvertendo i media ma<strong>in</strong>stream, utilizzando le loro stesse tecniche.<br />

L’idea di base è che costr<strong>in</strong>gendo <strong>la</strong> gente a <strong>in</strong>terrogarsi su quanto<br />

davvero sia reale una pubblicità, se ne demistifich<strong>in</strong>o i contenuti commerciali.<br />

Combattere il di<strong>la</strong>gare di loghi e pubblicità con le loro stesse armi,<br />

creando cortocircuiti percettivi, attraverso <strong>la</strong> ricontestualizzazione di<br />

simboli e icone del<strong>la</strong> cultura pop contemporanea.<br />

Questo è il Culture Jamm<strong>in</strong>g. Un term<strong>in</strong>e coniato dall’<strong>in</strong>die rock band<br />

Negativ<strong>la</strong>nd e reso popo<strong>la</strong>re dal critico culturale Mark Dery <strong>in</strong> un suo<br />

articolo pubblicato nel 1990 sul New York Times.<br />

English com<strong>in</strong>cia a modificare i manifesti pubblicitari al<strong>la</strong> North Texas<br />

State University nel 1984. Da allora ad oggi il culture jammer americano<br />

è <strong>in</strong>tervenuto su oltre 850 manifesti, <strong>in</strong> un primo momento per<br />

mostrare le proprie opere <strong>in</strong> pubblico, poi per veico<strong>la</strong>re messaggi sociali,<br />

politici e controculturali utilizzando quegli spazi.<br />

Le prime opere di questo genere furono le affissioni contro <strong>la</strong> mult<strong>in</strong>azionale<br />

del tabacco Camel, <strong>in</strong> cui English sostituiva <strong>la</strong> paro<strong>la</strong> Cancer<br />

– cancro - al nome delle sigarette mantenendole <strong>in</strong>variate, che apriranno<br />

<strong>la</strong> strada a una lunga serie di <strong>la</strong>vori, tra cui Th<strong>in</strong>k Different, un<br />

manifesto realizzato sul<strong>la</strong> falsa riga di quelli del<strong>la</strong> campagna del<strong>la</strong><br />

Apple Computer che associava il logo Mac a Gandhi, Picasso e Miles<br />

Davis. Ron English come testimonial per <strong>la</strong> “sua” campagna <strong>in</strong>vece<br />

"I look out the w<strong>in</strong>dow and I cannot see the mounta<strong>in</strong>s anymore,<br />

but a billboard”, said Ron English. “I am surrounded by<br />

corporate mascots that rule the world. Omnipresent yet untouchable.<br />

" This is the reason that, <strong>in</strong> the mid-1980’s, pushed<br />

the artist to <strong>in</strong>tervene <strong>in</strong> order to subverte the ma<strong>in</strong>stream<br />

media, us<strong>in</strong>g their own techniques. The ma<strong>in</strong> idea is that<br />

forc<strong>in</strong>g people to wonder about how real an advertisement is<br />

means demystify<strong>in</strong>g its commercial content.<br />

It means fight<strong>in</strong>g the spread of logos and advertisements with<br />

their own means and creat<strong>in</strong>g difficulties <strong>in</strong> their perception,<br />

through the new contextualization of symbols and icons of<br />

contemporary pop culture. We are writ<strong>in</strong>g about the Culture<br />

Jamm<strong>in</strong>g, a term co<strong>in</strong>ed from the <strong>in</strong>die rock band<br />

Negativ<strong>la</strong>nd and become popu<strong>la</strong>r thanks to the cultural critic<br />

Mark Dery <strong>in</strong> his article published <strong>in</strong> 1990 <strong>in</strong> The New York<br />

Times. English began to change billboards at the North Texas<br />

State University <strong>in</strong> 1984. S<strong>in</strong>ce then, the American culture<br />

jammer has modified more than 850 advertisements, to disp<strong>la</strong>y<br />

his works <strong>in</strong> public but also to convey social, political<br />

and countercultural messages us<strong>in</strong>g those spaces.<br />

The first works of this k<strong>in</strong>d were billboards aga<strong>in</strong>st the mult<strong>in</strong>ational<br />

tobacco Camel, where English rep<strong>la</strong>ced the brand of<br />

cigarettes with the word Cancer; this act would pave the way<br />

for a long series of works, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Th<strong>in</strong>k Different, a poster<br />

designed along the l<strong>in</strong>es of the Apple Computers advertisements,<br />

that comb<strong>in</strong>ed the Mac logo with Gandhi,<br />
