If we had uttered the words "bureaucracy" and "ghetto" in
the 1990’s as a slogan for the future of the United States,
we might have risked of being labeled as right-wing
Republicans or communist revolutionaries.
Getting through hard times such as the September 11 at-
tacks, the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008 and the end of
the huge economic growth that followed, the US has chan-
ged dramatically. In some respects, the US has matured,
getting ready for the challenge of globalization, which for
years has reduced the U.S. domestic market in a big Made
in China Market, where almost everything comes from abro-
ad, federal debt included. The average American man, living
in those Northern cities we called WASP, is well-mannered
and tries to be optimistic about the future, since optimism is
the start for actions leading to a deserved social and econo-
mic success: the American dream so much extolled by pessi-
mistic people, such as Italians can often be. In Southern ci-
ties, however, where immigration and poverty are more wi-
despread, mood and thoughts are different. Newcomers
from South America and poorer areas of Africa are called
Latinos and Nigers; they bring with them traditions and cul-
tures that can be little adapted to the competitiveness of
white people from North America, who have been living
there for generations and are integrated in the economic
and cultural life of the country, no matter if their descen-
dents were Italian, Irish or French. Minorities of the last ge-
neration are "resistant" to the multi-racial and cultural inte-
gration, and withdraw voluntarily in areas of the city that
often become ghettos, where getting in is difficult also for po-
lice: a state within a state that divides and creates huge pre-
judices. Is that the fault of the host country institutions or of
these communities that impose non-democratic rules and ri-
tuals? Today, the America of our dreams is hostage to these
minorities which have become the majority in electoral
terms, ethnic groups divided and not willing to live together,
often in competition with each other. Racism among minori-
ties is today the newest form of affirmation of the status of

rivoluzionari comunisti. Passando per tragici eventi come l’attacco
al cuore di Manhattan dell’11 Settembre 2001, la crisi economica
dei mutui sub prime (2008) e la conseguente fine della crescita economica
smisurata, l’America di oggi è cambiata in maniera radicale e,
sotto certi aspetti, è maturata preparandosi alla grande sfida della globalizzazione
che da anni ha ridotto il mercato interno americano in un
grande Made in China Market, dove ormai quasi tutto è straniero, debito
federale incluso.
L’americano medio delle grandi città del Nord che definiamo WASP è
una persona di buone maniere che sà interpretare con fiducia il futuro,
l’ottimismo è la base per sviluppare le azioni costruttive per un
meritato successo sociale ed economico: il sogno americano tanto
decantato dai pessimisti nati, quali gli italiani spesso sono.
Nelle città del Sud invece dove l’immigrazione di ultima generazione
è forte e continua e la povertà è maggiore, il clima e la mentalità sono
differenti. Latinos e Nigers come vengono definiti i nuovi arrivati dal
Sud America e l’Africa più povera, portano con sé tradizioni e culture
che poco si possono adattare ad uno spirito competitivo dei bianchi
del Nord, di quelli che l’America la vivono da generazioni e poco importa
che siano di origine italiana o irlandese o francese, sono integrati
nel tessuto economico e culturale più evoluto del paese.
Le minoranze di ultima generazione quindi sono “impermeabili” alla
integrazione multirazziale e culturale, e si chiudono volontariamente
in zone delle città che molte volte diventano ghetti inviolabili perfino
dalla polizia, uno stato nello stato che divide e crea pregiudizi enormi.
Colpa delle istituzioni del paese ospitante, oppure di queste comunità
che impongono riti e regole senza fondamento democratico?
Oggi l’America dei nostri sogni e pensieri è ostaggio di queste minoranze
che sono diventate maggioranza in termini elettorali, gruppi etnici
divisi senza volontà di convivenza, spesso in competizione tra
loro. Il razzismo tra minoranze è oggi la forma più evoluta di affermazione
del proprio status di nuovo cittadino americano.
Tutte queste tensioni sociali interne hanno generato un apparato burocratico
statale pari all’Europa, che rallenta la libera intraprendenza
