Here we are! Once again, the Royal Park "I Roveri" will host
the Italian Open from 13th to 26th September. Champions
will try to triumph in the perfect setting of an event that increase
in importance each year. The pure, stylish and innovative
Italian Open has a long tradition. Elegant as the style of
Francesco Pasquali who, on the tee of the first edition of the
Open in 1925, along with Prette and W. Jolly, decided not to
take off his jacket and just buttoned it up. At the end of the
36 holes, Pasquali inaugurated the gold book with an Italian
success. Another Italian who made the story of the Open is
not remembered for a performance but rather for his far-sighted
and innovative mind. He was called Agnelli
and started the first real promotional campaign for golf tourism
involving Henry Cotton, making him playing on the golf
course he had built in Sestriere. The success was immediate
and thousands of British people invaded the area made famous
by the champion. Then the war broke out and the
wave of enthusiasm decreased; this was an unlucky event,
maybe Agnelli’s genius and initiative could have allowed Italy
to reach a highest quality in golf tourism that is still lacking
today. When the war finished, the Open started developing
again, often changing location and including just six Italian

l’Open d’Italia dal 13 al 16 settembre, i nostri campioni cercheranno di
trionfare sul campo in una cornice perfetta per un evento che sembra
crescere ogni anno di più. Una lunga storia quella dell’Open d’Italia,
caratterizzata da un’italianità pura, elegante e innovativa.
Elegante, come lo stile di Francesco Pasquali che posizionato sul tee di
partenza della prima edizione dell’Open datata 1925, insieme ad altri
due signori Prette e W. Jolly, decise di non togliersi la giacca limitandosi
ad abbottonarla. Al termine delle 36 buche Pasquali guardò tutti
dall’alto verso il basso inaugurando l’albo d’oro con uno stupendo tricolore.
Un altro italiano che ha scritto a suo modo la storia dell’Open
non si ricorda per una sua prestazione ma piuttosto per uno sguardo
particolarmente lungimirante ed innovativo. Si chiamava Agnelli e
diede il via alla prima vera campagna promozionale per il turismo golfistico
ingaggiando Henry Cotton e portandolo a giocare sul percorso
che aveva fatto costruire a Sestriere. Il successo fu immediato e migliaia
di inglesi impazziti popolarono il campo reso famoso dal campione.
Venne la guerra e l’ondata di entusiasmo si appiattì, classico caso in cui
il ciclo degli eventi non gira nella giusta maniera, magari la genialità e
l’intraprendenza di Agnelli avrebbe potuto permettere all’Italia un
salto di qualità nel turismo golfistico che manca ancora oggi.
