The Guggenheim
Museum
The Guggenheim Museum in New York is located at 1071
Fifth Avenue, between 88th and 89th Streets, on that
stretch called Museum Mile.
First known as Museum of Non-Objective Painting, the
Guggenheim was established to showcase avant-garde art,
such as works by Vasilij Kandinskij and Piet Mondrian,
which in those years was developing quickly.
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the museum building is
one of the 20th century's most important and discussed architectural
landmarks.
The last of Lloyd Wright’s works, the building instantly polarized
architecture critics, though today it is widely praised.
From the street, the building looks like a cylinder, with the
top wider than the bottom, surrounded by a white ribbon.
The building sharply contrasts with Manhattan skyscrapers,
and Wright went as far as to claim that the Guggenheim
would make the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art “look
like a Protestant barn.” From the outside, the building looks
welcoming, with flower boxes at street level which also offer
the possibility to seat down and an interesting curved first
floor. The building is shaped as an overturned spiral, reminding
people of an overturned Tower of Babel, a symbol of
the union of peoples through art and culture. On the inside,
the gallery is spiral-shaped from the first floor to the top of
the building. Works are displayed in exhibition niches and
halls that surround the central spiral. The Museum features
works by such artists as Piet Mondrian, Paul Cézanne,
Edouard Manet, Marc Chagall, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste
Renoir, Paul Gauguin, Vasily Kandinsky, Joan Mirò
and Pablo Picasso.

Il Guggenheim Museum si trova al 1071 della 5th Avenue all’altezza
della 88th street, nel tratto denominato Museum Mile.
Originariamente denominato Museo della pittura non-oggetiva
(Museum of Non-Objective Painting), il Guggenheim fu costruito
per esporre le nascenti avanguardie artistiche che si andavano
sempre più imponendo, come Vasilij Kandinskij e Piet Mondrian.
L’edificio che ospita il Museo fu progettato da Frank Lloyd Wright
e rappresenta una delle opere più discusse e interessanti dell’architettura
moderna. L'ultimo grande lavoro di Wright, catturò fin
da subito l’attenzione dei critici architettonici, ed è ancora mondialmente
riconosciuto come uno dei capolavori dell’architettura
contemporanea. Dalla strada, l’edificio assomiglia a un nastro
bianco che si avvolge attorno a un cilindro più ampio in cima che
alla base. Il suo aspetto è in forte contrasto con i più caratteristici
grattacieli di Manhattan che lo circondano, fatto molto gradito a
Wright, che dichiarò infatti, che il suo museo avrebbe fatto sembrare
il vicino Metropolitan Museum of Art "simile a una baracca
Protestante". Per il visitatore che lo vede dall’esterno è una struttura
avvolgente e ospitale con fioriere a livello della strada progettate
anche per sedersi. Il grande primo piano curvo che si affaccia
direttamente sulla strada è un motivo di invito per il passante.
La sua forma a spirale capovolta assomiglia a una Torre di
Babele a rovescio che simboleggia l’unione dei popoli attraverso
l’arte e la cultura. All’interno, la galleria espositiva forma una
dolce spirale che sale dal piano terra fino alla cima dell’edificio.
I dipinti sono esposti lungo i muri della spirale e in alcune stanze
che si trovano lungo il percorso, e comprendono alcune tra le
opere dei più grandi artisti e pittori della storia: Piet Mondrian,
Paul Cézanne, Edouard Manet, Marc Chagall, Edgar Degas,
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, Vasily Kandinsky, Joan Mirò
e Pablo Picasso.
