La strada si fa più stretta quando si
entra nel Parco delle Capanne di
Marcarolo, ottomila ettari di territorio
incontaminato, paradiso per gli
amanti del trekking e della natura.
Siamo nel cuore dell’Oltregiogo, da
sempre crocevia e terra di passaggio
tra le genti della costa e quelle della
pianura, per secoli luogo di scontri
e grandi battaglie. Nei pressi dell’ex
convento Benedettino, oggi
Sacrario dei Martiri della Benedicta,
ogni anno si ricorda uno dei più efferati
eccidi dell’ultima guerra,
quando nell’aprile del 1944 le truppe
nazifasciste, dopo un sanguinoso
rastrellamento tra la Liguria e il Piemonte,
fucilarono centoquarantasette
giovani e ne deportarono altri
quattrocento. Oggi resta un prezioso
luogo della memoria. Oltrepassato
il Sacrario, la strada procede nel

Pontedecimo on the northern
fringes of Genoa, a steep road
takes you to Praglia, where the
landscape is almost alpine, in spite
of the blue sea in the distance.
The road narrows to enter the
Park of the Capanne di
Marcarolo—8,000 hectares of
pristine land, a hiker’s paradise, a

bosco per poi aprirsi al meraviglioso
spettacolo della gola stretta tra i
monti e il fiume. Il percorso, ripido e
tortuoso, segue il dorso delle montagne,
poi il tracciato diventa più
dolce e l’aria improvvisamente ha il
profumo dell’uva appena schiacciata…
siamo in prossimità di Gavi. Tutto
intorno, filari e vigne. A Tassarolo,
Massimiliana Spinola ci apre le
porte della sua cantina e ci presenta
il suo vino: un Gavi biologico senza
aggiunta di solfiti, sincero e
schietto come chi lo produce.
Sulla via del ritorno il Forte di Gavi
cattura lo sguardo e s’impone
fiero della sua storia millenaria e il
viaggiatore non può mancarne la
visita. Ripresa la strada, si oltrepassa
Voltaggio, si raggiunge il Passo
della Bocchetta e s’inizia a salire.
Raggiunto il Passo, in pochi km si è
di ritorno a Genova. Per una volta
anche “la zainetta” si è goduta il
viaggio!

to the heart of the Oltregiogo,
which has since time immemorial
been a crossroads for people
going and coming to the sea from
the plains of Lombardy, and also
seen many a battleground in
centuries past. Near the old
Benedictine convent, today better
known for the “Sacrario dei
Martiri della Benedicta”, each year
it is remembered that a massacre
took place here during the Second
World War. It was April of 1944
when Nazi troops did a bloody
roundup of partisans in Liguria
and the Piedmont. They shot 147
young Italians, and deported
another 400, who are not
forgotten today.
Once we are past the Sacrario, the
road goes on into the woods, until
it opens onto a marvelous
spectacle of a narrow gorge
between the mountains and the
river. The route is steep and
winding as it follows the crest of
the mountain. Then it levels out,
and the air suddenly fills with the
perfume of freshly-pressed
grapes…we must be nearing Gavi.
All around us are lines of
grapevines in vineyards. In
Tassarolo, Massimiliana Spinola
opens the door to his wine cellar
for us and allows us to sample his
wares. He makes an organic
version of the area’s Gavi white
wine, with no sulphate additives,
which is as sincere and as frank as
the man who produces it. On our
way back, the Fortress of Gavi
catches our eye, as it guards the
valley, proud of its thousand year
old history, and we can’t help but
stop to check it out. Then we are
back on the road. We pass
Voltaggio, enter the Pass of the
Bocchetta, and begin our climb.
We reach the summit of the pass,
and in just a few kilometers we are
heading back down to Genoa, but
for once, even the “little backpack”
tagging along behind has
thoroughly enjoyed the trip!
