beaches along the Riviera: wild and natural bays, sandy beaches where
they dance all night long, and coastlines where history and nature meet
Tuttoggi il borgo vecchio di Varigotti è suggestivo
e, siccome il traffico è limitatissimo,
capita che i bambini corrano per strada liberi
e anche scalzi come decenni fa. Gina Lagorio,
a cui qui hanno dedicato la piazza vicino al
molo, ha descritto tante volte la Liguria, i suoi
golfi, i paesi, i poeti e la gente. Piemontese, ma
trasferita a Savona nel dopoguerra, Gina ha frequentato
fino che ha potuto, ogni estate, la cittadina
del ponente ligure e nuotato nella spiaggia
tra il golfo dei Saraceni e Varigotti. Questo
lido amato si ritrova in particolare ne“La spiaggia
del lupo”, un romanzo degli anni Settanta
che fece scalpore per via della giovane, spericolata
protagonista che, tra Milano e la Liguria, fa
esperienza del proprio “corpo d’amore”. La spiaggia
è di quelle pietrose alla ligure ma l’acqua è
spesso cristallina, trasparente. Avverte la figlia

The old village of Varigotti is still today a picture
postcard from the past. With traffic heavily
restricted, barefoot children still run freely in
the streets just as they did decades ago. Gina
Lagorio, to whom the town has dedicated a piazza
near the pier, has often described Liguria—its gulfs,
villages, poets, and people. Originally from the
Piedmont, she moved to Savona, on the Italian
Riviera, after the war and made a true effort every
summer to get to know the people of the area on
the beaches that lie between the Gulf of the
Saracens and Varigotti.
It was along this beloved stretch of the Riviera that
she sited her novel, “La Spiaggia del Lupo” (The
Beach of the Wolf). A romance out of the seventies,
it became instantly famous due to its young and
adventurous main character who, between Milan
and Liguria, experiences her own “body of love”. The
beach is typical of Liguria—pebbles and crystal clear
