In mare finiscono anche i materiali trasportati dai
fiumi che depositandosi hanno dato origine alle
rocce sedimentarie come i Calcari Marnosi del
monte Antola, che costituiscono la maggior parte
dei rilievi montuosi intorno a Genova (ad esempio
il monte Fasce o l’Antola, quello che dà appunto
il nome alla Formazione geologica).
Il grande demiurgo nella sua azione di modellamento
lascia delle presenze significative: i geositi
che sono i testimoni dell’evoluzione della superficie
terrestre, architetture naturali che “raccontano”
i processi che hanno formato e plasmato il
pianeta. Forniscono, dunque, un contributo fondamentale
alla comprensione della storia geologica
di una zona. La Liguria ne è particolare ricca
e la Regione ha recentemente edito L’atlante dei
geositi della Liguria. Guida alla lettura del paesaggio
geomorfologico ligure. Non solo, ha anche
promulgato la legge n.39 del 2009 per la salvaguardia
e la valorizzazione della geodiversità e
delle aree carsiche.
I geositi, dunque, sono elementi di interesse
scientifico oltre che richiami culturali e didattici.
E alcuni esemplari - come il Selciato del gi-

leaves significant traces of his presence. These are
called geo-sites, and they bear witness to the
evolution of the surface of the earth. Their natural
architecture tells of the processes that have formed
and shaped our planet. They therefore make a
fundamental contribution to the understanding of
the geological history of a region. Liguria is a region
that is particularly rich in these formations, and that
is why the Regione Liguria has recently published an
“Atlas of the Geo-sites of Liguria: a guide for reading
the geo-morphological landscape in Liguria”. And it
has also done even more, the regional government
has also passed law n.39, which protects and values
the area’s geo-diversity and marlstone.
As a result, geo-sites are becoming an element of
great cultural and educational value in addition to
their fundamental scientific interest. Several examples
of this kind have become world heritage sites like the
Giant’s Causeway in Ireland. And other important
features of a land—be they historic, nature-related, or
architectural—can be associated in certain cases with
the geological features, increasing the value of both.
