La prima donna afroamericana a vincere il Pulitzer
è una delle penne più famose del giornalismo
internazionale. Corrispondente e capo redattore
è stata inclusa nel Best Writing America che raccoglie i
migliori reportage degli ultimi 30 anni di stampa Usa.
Poi ha deciso di studiare e raccontare all’America la storia
dimenticata della sua gente, l’epopea dei neri del
Sud degli Stati Uniti che tra il 1915 e il 1960 si spostarono
a milioni verso il Nord industrializzato. Isabel Wilkerson
ha presentato a Genova il suo libro, The Warmth
of Other Suns – The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration
(Al tepore di un altro sole, L’epopea della grande
migrazione americana), e all’auditorium del Museo
del Mare, nel cuore di quello stesso porto che «fu il
gateway per tanti degli italiani che andarono a costruire
l’America», ha parlato di giornalismo, politica, cultura
e accoglienza.
Lei insegna giornalismo in alcune delle migliori università
americane: quanto è cambiato il suo mestiere
in questi ultimi anni?
Il ruolo del giornalista è esattamente lo stesso, penso
anzi sia diventato ancora più importante. Si tende a
darlo per scontato, ma saper interpretare, capire, raccontare
gli eventi alla gente rimane fondamentale. Lo
dimostra la notizia dell’anno (almeno per noi americani),
la cattura di Bin Laden dello scorso maggio: gli avvenimenti
più complessi hanno bisogno di essere raccontati
da un “intermediario”.
Però il primo a dare la notizia del blitz nel rifugio
dello sceicco del terrore è stato un blogger pakistano
su twitter.

journalism, politics, culture, and welcome.
You have taught journalism in some of
America’s best universities. How has the
profession changed in recent years?
The role of the journalist has
remained exactly the same. In fact,
I would say that it has become
yet more important.
