Genova per noi, ed è un omaggio al grande demiurgo
del pianeta che è il mare. Con il moto ondoso,
infatti, erode, spezza, divide, frantuma
senza fermarsi mai. È uno dei più efficaci agenti
modellatori della superficie terrestre. Nella storia
della Terra la dimensione dei mari e delle terre
emerse si è trasformata di continuo e anche il livello
dei mari non è sempre stato alla quota di
oggi. Varia essenzialmente, infatti, per via delle
diverse condizioni climatiche: l’espandersi dei
ghiacciai (nei periodi freddi o nelle ere glaciali)
fa sì che il livello del mare si abbassi mentre la
fusione del ghiaccio, nei periodi caldi (interglaciali)
come quello che stiamo vivendo, porta
ad un innalzamento del livello delle acque.

sings Paolo Conte in his song, “Genova per
noi” (Genoa for Us). In it he pays homage, using
magnificent poetry, to that great demiurge of the
planet, the sea. Waves, in fact, erode, divide, crash,
break, without ever stopping. They are one of the
main forces in shaping the surface of the land. In the
story of the Earth, the size of the seas and of
submerged lands have steadily changed, reflecting the
dynamics of our planet. Even the level of the sea has
not always been at the height that we see it today. It
varies essentially because of changing climatic
conditions. The expansion of glaciers, in cold periods
or ice ages, takes the level down, but when they melt,
in warm or interglacial periods like the one that we
are living through today, sea level rises.
In addition, all the material that is transported by
rivers is deposited in the seas. This has given origin to
sedimentary rocks like the calcium carbonate
marlstone of Monte Antola, the type of stone that
makes up the greater part of the mountains around
Genoa (like Monte Fasce). Monte Antola even gave its
name to this type of geological formation.
