lue sound New Trolls, è di nuovo rock e barocco Once Again Rock and Baroque Max Morales Quarant’anni dopo l’esordio internazionale dei New Trolls che, con il loro primo Concerto Grosso, si fecero conoscere come la più evoluta prog-rock band italiana, questi quattro genovesi eccellenti propongono oggi un terzo atto del lavoro iniziato nei primi anni ’70. Vittorio De Scalzi, Nico Di Palo, Giorgio D’Adamo e Gianni Bellino, dopo aver rifondato l’anno scorso la band originaria, hanno creato il Concerto Grosso N.3 che, unito ad altri tre inediti, ha costituito un disco, uscito per Aerostella e che sarà distribuito a livello internazionale. Il lavoro, presentato in anteprima al Teatro lirico di Genova in maggio insieme al Maestro Luis Bacalov (artista straordinario che aveva già collaborato con i New Trolls) all’orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice, è unico per intensità e 110 Forty years have passed since New Trolls made their international debut at their first big concert, Concerto Grosso, which founded their reputation as the most evolved Italian prog-rock band. These four excellent Genoese musicians—Vittorio De Scalzi, Nico Di Palo, Giorgio D’Adamo, and Gianni Bellino—are now proposing a third act to the work that began in the early seventies. Re-creating the original band, they have composed Concerto Grosso N.3, which, when joined by other three unpublished works, is now the basis for their new record, made by Aerostella, and ready for international distribution. Their work was presented in a preview at the Opera House of Genoa in May— with the conductor of Teatro Carlo Felice, Maestro Luis Bacalov (the extraordinary artiste who collaborated with the New Trolls)— I New Trolls in concerto New Trolls in concert virtuosismo. Tema del nuovo concerto Grosso è Venezia risorta dalle acque – Repubblica marinara proprio come Genova e allegoricamente rappresentata dalla morte di Ofelia – dopo una violenta tempesta. Nel cd ci sono anche nuove canzoni scritte appositamente dopo la storica reunion del 2010. La struttura musicale è composta da ben 5 movimenti e i testi sono di matrice shakespeariana. Lo splendido connubio di logos e suono è frutto di un lavoro capillare iniziato in studio anni fa ed ora ripreso e ottimizzato anche grazie all’esperienza del Maestro Bacalov nel mondo delle colonne sonore e alla sua abilità nel coniugare due mondi distanti tra loro quali sono il rock e la musica barocca in una sperimentazione progressive (filo conduttore di Photo Daniele Ferretti which showed its uniqueness with regards to intensity and virtuoso performance. The theme of the new Grosso concert is “Venice Arising from the Waters” after a violent storm. Venice, a Maritime Republic like Genoa, is allegorically represented by the death of Ophelia. In the CD there are also some new songs that have been written specifically after their historic reunion of 2010. The music structure is composed of five movements, and the text has a Shakespearian matrix. The splendid marriage of logos and sound is the fruit of a detailed work that began in the studio several years ago, and today has been taken up once again and optimized thanks also to the experience of Maestro Bacalov in sound track techniques and to his ability to put together two distinct worlds, and namely rock and baroque music, into a progressive experiment (the driving force in this work). Following the record will be a tour which will take these four indefatigable artistes onto Italian and international stages. Concerto grosso N.3 has had tremendous success in the Far East and in all progressive international environments. New Trolls have been collaborating with Luis Enriquez Bacalov on pieces like these orchestral suites since 1971, the year they gave their first Concerto grosso. The idea was actually Bacalov’s, and it was produced by Sergio Bardotti. It received cult status, and not just in Italy, for the progressive music genre. The first Concerto grosso was followed by a second in 1976.

La collaborazione con Luis Enriquez Bacalov, così come la creazione di questo genere di suite orchestrali, risale al 1971, anno in cui i New Trolls Blu Nepal, lezione di stile Blu Nepal, Lessons in Style proponevano il primo Concerto grosso. Ideato da Bacalov stesso e prodotto da Sergio Bardotti rimase per sempre un cult per tutti gli amanti, non solo italiani, del genere progressive. A questo primo Concerto grosso ne seguì un secondo nel 1976 (era già il sesto disco dei New Trolls). Jazz? Funky? Pop? Indie? Elettronica? Drum&bass? Queste sono solo alcune delle componenti dell’originalissimo suono dei Blu Nepal, una band nata solo due anni fa e che ha prodotto da qualche mese il proprio lavoro d’esordio dal titolo Doesn’t it? I Blu Nepal sono Roberto Nappi Calcagno alla tromba, Agostino Macor alle tastiere e al Fender Rhodes, Paolo Furio Marasso al basso e Federico Branca alla batteria. Il lavoro si apre con un brano a dominante acid jazz dal titolo Get mad! Get crazy! e si conclude con Montecarlo, romanza funky. In mezzo c’è una Suite in 3 parti nella quale si evoca il linguaggio della musica per film di Ennio Morricone. Il disco è volutamente disomogeneo. L’insolito quartetto genovese è eclettico ma si riconosce un suono peculiare che fa da filo conduttore e permette all’ascoltatore di partecipare non a una celebrazione di virtuosismo ma a una lezione di stile. The members of Blu Nepal are Roberto Nappi Calcagno on the horns, Agostino Macor at the keyboard and Fender Rhodes, Paolo Furio Marasso, bass, and Federico Branca, drums. It opens with a piece, entitled Get mad! Get crazy! where acid jazz dominates, and concludes with Montecarlo, a funky romance. In the middle is a Suite in 3 parts, in which Ennio Morricone’s music language for movies is evoked. The album, (the EP) which holds only 5 traces, is deliberately unhomogeneous. This unusual Genoese quartet is eclectic, but a particular sound that relates to them can be recognized: atmosphere is the thread, allowing the listener to participate not just in a virtuoso celebration, but in a lesson of style. Questo cd in realtà è preceduto da un Ep (ovvero una sorta di cd breve) dal titolo in terza persona. Ma questo è certamente il primo lavoro organico e maturo della cantautrice che nasce dalla collaborazione con la Dcave records di Catania e in particolare con Daniele Grasso. È lui, in veste di produttore artistico, che ha saputo dare al disco l’atmosfera indie americana in cui la Amandolese voleva vedere immerse le sue canzoni. Nella Stanza degli Specchi è un disco che racconta storie spesso autobiografiche attraverso emozioni e impressioni ma utilizzando il “filtro” del cantautore, che ci guida nel prendere posizione di fronte alla realtà. A incorniciare un lavoro permeato da un’estetica old school campeggia tra le tracce una cover di Jimi Hendrix. L’utilizzo del racconto in terza persona permette all’autrice di prendere un certo distacco dalle proprie liriche, recuperando una lucidità descrittiva che lascia spazio anche al giudizio dell’ascoltatore. Valentina Amandolese is a Genoese singer-songwriter, who first came to fame when she won the semi-finals of the Bindi Prize. Her latest successful album, In the Room of Mirrors, Nella stanza degli specchi, is following on the heels of an EP (a short CD) called In Third Person, in terza persona. This is the first organic and mature work that the singersongwriter has done in collaboration with Dcave Records in Catania and in particular with Daniele Grasso, the artistic producer who has given the American indie atmosphere that Amandolese wanted to her songs. Nella Stanza degli Specchi is a record that often tells autobiographical stories through emotions and impressions filtered by the author who guides us into taking a position when facing reality. To frame the work, which is permeated by an old school esthetic, it stands among the traces of a cover by Jimi Hendrix. Using the tale told in the third person allows the singer to detach herself from her own songs, obtaining a descriptive lucidity which also leaves room for the listener’s judgment. 111
