DiLemmi
How to Play DiLemmi
Ogni mano del gioco dei lemmi è
gestita da un Master, il giocatore
che deve selezionare il vocabolo
che reputa più difficile e dare il
via alla gara tra “parolai”:
comunicata la parola ai
partecipanti, deve scrivere la
definizione corretta su un
foglietto e aspettare che in tre
minuti (una clessidra di tempo) gli
altri giocatori elaborino e scrivano
le loro definizioni inventate. Una
volta scaduto il tempo e lette ad
alta voce le varie definizioni, si
vota quella che si giudica esatta,
e, dopo che il master l’ha svelata e
ha assegnato i punteggi, ci si
muove sul tabellone di un numero
di caselle pari ai punti ottenuti.
Durante il percorso i giocatori
possono imbattersi in caselledifficoltà
che condizionano la
scrittura delle loro definizioni
attraverso una serie di limiti e
giochi linguistici. Per vincere,
invece, il giocatore che per primo
arriva al traguardo deve ricordare
il significato di una delle parole
estratte durante il gioco.
Each round of the lemma game
[dilemma comes from the Greek
word lemma] is run by a Master,
the player who selects the word
challenge. He gives the word to
the players, the “parolai”
[“worders”], who have to write
down their definition on a piece
of paper, and wait three minutes
(timed by the hourglass) for the
others to invent and elaborate
their own definitions. Once the
time is up, and the various
definitions have been read, a vote
is held to decide who came
closest to the truth, as revealed
by the master. Points are then
assigned, enabling the players to
move forward on the board.
During the course of the game
the players may land on
“difficulty” squares, which oblige
them to write their definitions by
using writing composition
methods that restrict or plays on
words. To win, the player who
reaches the finish line, must recall
the meaning of one of the words
extracted during the game.

del dizionario, il gioco delle parole sconosciute
si è via via affinato e arricchito di regole e varianti,
diventando, nel 2010, il brevetto di un gioco
da tavolo a tutti gli effetti, con pedine, dadi, clessidra,
carte-difficoltà e nome sul tabellone: DiLemmi.

e, contemporaneamente,

creando con i vocaboli
più ignoti, in disuso o
passati di moda della lingua

patented) DiLemmi
In attesa della produzione su larga scala (il brevetto
è all’asta, si saprà entro l’anno quale azienda lancerà
il gioco sul mercato), DiLemmi si è nel frattempo
sdoppiato dando vita a diversi format. Appena usciti
con lo Zanichelli 2012 la prima edizione telematica
del dizionario dei Difficiliora e un quiz interattivo,
il primo grande successo del gioco delle parole
difficili è andato in onda nello scorso maggio, ai microfoni
della trasmissione di Radio24 “Il riposo del
guerriero”. La puntata che ospitava il collettivo dei
sette ha infatti coinvolto decine e decine di ascoltatori,
intervenuti via sms per dare la loro definizione
delle parole difficili proposte dai conduttori, ed è
stata solo un’anteprima della prossima programmazione
autunnale, di cui la versione radiofonica di Di-
Lemmi dovrebbe diventare un appuntamento fisso.
Sintonizzandosi sulle frequenze giuste ci si potrà improvvisare
“cacciatori di parole perdute”, e scoprire
che, per esempio, il nasco è un vitigno sardo, il cafisso
un’antica unità di misura per grano e olio, la
tegenaria un ragno grigiastro (con otto zampe) e il
figulinaio chi lavora la terracotta. E che abballinare
non vuol dire «ballare sulla musica degli Abba» - come
da definizione inventata da un ascoltatore - ma
semplicemente “arrotolare i materassi per fargli
prendere aria”.
And that’s how it all started, evenings spent in the
company of a dictionary. The tale grew in the telling,
as the game was enriched with rules and variations,
until in 2010 it was patented as a table game with all
the obligatory accessories: dice, markers, an hourglass,
difficulty cards, and a name, DiLemmi. “Our
evening pastime became a true structured game,”
the seven reminisce (as they hold a reunion, coming
from Rome, Bologna, Sestri Levante, to the Zanichelli
estate in the Tuscan countryside outside Lucca),
“which takes around two hours, and involves
guessing the meaning of
obscure or unknown
terms, and then finding a
plausible definition for
them [we are providing
our readers with the rules
on the side of this article].
You win, and you also
enjoy the game more, if
you really know the
Italian language well, but
also have a gift for
creativity and invention in
the definitions and
vocabulary. It’s a game
that can also be done at a
party, with a big group of
people,” they continue,
“it’s fun to use your wits, and it also increases your
general knowledge of Italian and its lesser-known
terms and expressions from the past.”
While we wait for the game production to be ramped
up, (the patent is being bid on, and we will know by
Christmas who the lucky winner will be), DiLemmi in
the meantime is mutating into various formats. With
the authoritative Italian dictionary, Zanichelli 2012, an
electronic, Difficiliora Dictionary, is included, along
with an interactive quiz. The first great success of the
Game of the Difficult Words was broadcast to a large
audience last May using the microphones of Radio24.
The episode brought out tons of spectators, who sent
in their text message definitions of the difficult words
the radio talk show host was proposing. This was a
sneak preview for the show coming this autumn,
which will be given a regular broadcast by DiLemmi.
As you listen to the show, and train to be a “Hunter
of Lost Words”, you will discover that a nasco is a
Sardinian vine, a cafisso is an ancient measurement
for grain and olive oil, a tegenaria is a gray spider
with eight legs, and a figulinaio works terracotta.
Abballinare doesn’t mean ballare ballarewith the
Swedish rock group Abba - as per the definition that
a listener called in - but to “roll a mattress to air it
out”.
