product. And these must create
networks and social exchanges that
honor the dignity of he who tills the
fields.
Apart from consumption, what
else is going on? Can we say that
today the consumer is becoming a
co-producer? That with his
purchases and his way of living, he
is becoming an integral part of
this quality?
I think that this is still in the future,
in spite of the farmer’s markets, the
kilometer zero campaigns, and other
virtuous examples in the local
economy. Consumerism, and not just
in food, has confused the issue. In
practice it self-generates, pushed by
an infinite race to emulate, and not
generated by real needs or by
spontaneous satisfaction levels. This
trend is so pronounced that at times
we even see that certain niche food
products are consumed just because
they are “niche” products. It’s the
same sort of mentality as “keeping
up with the Jones” in fashionable
clothes or cell phones. Those who
have seen “terra madre”, Mother
Earth, know that this great network
of people, even far distant from each
other, gather in Turin every two
years. They are aware of the need to
live together with the land in a
different way. Perhaps this will
happen when we start asking
questions that have no answer.
Perhaps then eating will become an
“agricultural act”.
