Nel 1978 e nel 1980 venni chiamato per
controllare una vasca di raffreddamento
del reattore nucleare di Caorso che aveva
dato segnali di instabilità. Indossavo
una muta superstagna, completamente
sigillata, con doppi guanti tipo quelli da
cucina. Non doveva penetrare neppure
un granellino di polvere radioattiva, nessun
residuo di uranio doveva infilarsi nella
muta, altrimenti non sarei qui a raccontarlo...
È stata un’esperienza strana,
avevo la sensazione di un pericolo totalmente
invisibile.

Quando si lavorava nei cantieri di recupero
per demolire vecchi cassoni, staccare
lamiere, spesso si faceva uso di
esplosivi sott’acqua. Dopo aver sistemato
le cariche si risaliva sull’imbarcazione
e prima di procedere alle esplosioni veniva
effettuato velocemente il conteggio
dei sub. Capitava nella confusione (a
bordo ci potevano essere anche più di
venti persone) di sbagliare il conto e non
pochi erano stati dimenticati in acqua,
con le conseguenze che si possono immaginare.
Allora per agevolare il compito
di quelli che dovevano controllare, si
impose ai palombari e solo a loro, di utilizzare
un berretto di colore rosso. Indossarlo
a bordo era il sistema per salvare
la pelle.

And the most dangerous?
In 1978, and then in 1980, I was called
on to check out a cooling tank at the
Caorso nuclear reactor which was
showing signs of instability. I had to put
on a super-protective wetsuit, totally
sealed, with double gloves—like those
you use in the kitchen. Nothing got
through it, not even a mote of
radioactive dust, no traces of uranium,
otherwise I wouldn’t be here to tell the
tale…It was definitely an odd
experience.

When you work in demolition shipyards,
to break apart old hulls, strip the sheet
metal, often you use explosives
underwater. After we set the charge, we
would climb on board the ship and
before setting off the explosion we
would count the scuba divers.
Sometimes in the confusion, someone
would make a mistake, and quite a few
divers were left in the water—with
consequences that you can well
imagine. So therefore, to make the head
count easier, the divers were forced—
only the divers—to wear a red beret…

sinergie e joint venture con società internazionali.
Tra i suoi principali clienti l'Ansaldo, Saipem, Regione Liguria, Genova Acque, Porto
Petroli, Tribunale di Genova, Ministero della Difesa. Ha effettuato anche interventi
di bonifica sulla Haven. L'azienda, che ha sede a Molo Giano, tra impiegati, tecnici
e operatori subacquei, occupa una trentina di persone.

Its main clients are Ansaldo, Saipem, Regione Liguria, Genova Acque, Porto
Petroli (the Petroleum Port), Tribunale di Genova (the Courts of Genoa), and the
Italian Ministry of Defense. Drafinsub has even worked to restore the wreck of
the Haven. The company, with headquarters on the pier, Molo Giano, employs
around thirty people between employees, technicians, and underwater
operators.
