Collegare il mio libro su San Fruttuoso - Il Paradiso
dietro l’angolo edito da Erga - ad un
articolo sulle spiagge della Liguria, come mi
ha chiesto Blue, è terribilmente facile.
Non solo la spiaggia di questo meraviglioso angolo
è una delle più belle del mondo e capace di
struggere il nostro cuore, ma tutto il mio racconto,
forse tutta la mia infanzia, a ben vedere, ruota
intorno alla spiaggia di San Fruttuoso, che non
è solo un piccolo paese ligure. È il Paradiso.
È un posto dove le macchine non esistono, e
quando io ero piccola l’unico rumore davvero prepotente
era il “rumore” del mare. Sei o sette case
costruite intorno ad un convento medievale,
un’Abbazia di monaci in una cala isolata che, grazie
alle ripidissime pareti, non ha mai potuto essere
raggiunta da una strada.
Così a San Fruttuoso ci si arriva solo con un traghetto
da un centinaio di posti che parte da Camogli
o da Rapallo ogni ora, d’estate, e una volta
al giorno d’inverno. Quando il mare è troppo grosso
non c’è verso di arrivare (o di andare via), se
non a piedi. Ed è una salita piuttosto dura.
San Fruttuoso nel dopoguerra era il ritrovo dei ricchi,
che partivano da Portofino per farsi portare a
mangiare da Giovanni, allora l’unico ristorante del
posto con le specialità liguri e un antico oste. Co-

my book about San Fruttuoso, Il Paradiso dietro
l’angolo (Paradise Around the Corner, published
by Erga) with an article about beaches in Liguria—
was an exceedingly easy task. This place is such a
marvelous sea spot, one of the most beautiful in the
world, almost heart-breakingly beautiful, and the
whole of my tale, and perhaps of my childhood,
revolves around the beach of San Fruttuoso, so
much more than the tinest Ligurian village, it is
Paradise.
The nearest car is miles away. When I was small, the
only strong background noise I heard was the sea.
Six or seven houses are built around a medieval
abby for monks on an isolated inlet surrounding by
steep cliffs which made road-building impossible.
The only way to get here is by the steamboats,
which hold around a hundred visitors. The boat
service leaves from Camogli or Rapallo once every
hour in the summer, once a day in the winter. When
the sea is rough, it doesn’t leave, and the only way
the inhabitants can travel is on foot, with a climb
that is steep and strenuous.
After the war, San Fruttuoso was a bastion of the
rich, who would come from Portofino to eat at
Giovanni, which at the time was the only restaurant
in the place, an ancient osteria specializing in
