sì è diventata famosa la caletta.
Io ho trascorso circa 25 estati a San Fruttuoso, dal
1960 agli anni ’80, erede di una tradizione famigliare
nata con mio padre, Sandro Scarsi. Prima
della guerra, animati da spirito scoutistico, lui ed
altri cinque amici, (Ettore Veruggio, Roby Clavarino,
Checco Segalerba, Paolo De Mari, Ubi Sannazzaro)
una volta scoperta San Fruttuoso, decisero
di portarci le tende, le canne da pesca, le
fiocine, e di provare a vivere per un mese in isolamento.
Riuscirono anche a dipingere in mezzo
alle formiche ed al salino, riempiendo “L’Album
del campeggio, Il Libro dei Sei”, testimone goliardico
dell’avventura.
Papà non smise mai di andare a San Fruttuoso e
fu così pazzo da portarci la mamma in viaggio di
nozze: passarono i primi quindici giorni in una capanna
che era stata una stalla. Poi siamo arrivate
Paola ed io, e la stalla è diventata la base delle nostre
estati, passate soprattutto sulla spiaggia, di
giorno sotto il sole e di notte sotto le stelle, a volte
direttamente in mare. L’11 agosto di ogni anno
papà e mamma erano ospiti fissi da Giovanni per
festeggiare il loro anniversario.
Mia madre aveva una grande amica, la Gianna,
(sorella del bagnino e figlia di Riccardo, l’ultimo
fabbricante di corde vegetali) con la quale andava
per totani. Nel silenzio della notte, quando il
mare era calmo, le si poteva sentire ridere mentre
facevano piazza pulita di tutti i totani della zona.
Poi alcuni li mettevano nel freezer del ristorante,
e il resto li vendevano. E i pescatori uomini ave-

I have spent around 25 summers in San Fruttuoso,
from 1960 to the eighties, as the happy heir to a
family tradition. It was born with my father, Sandro
Scarsi, before the war. Filled with scouting ambition,
he and five other friends (Ettore Veruggio, Roby
Clavarino, Checco Segalerba, Paolo De Mari, and Ubi
Sannazzaro) discovered San Fruttuoso, and decided
to go there with their tents, fishing rods and fishing
lines, to try out a month spent in total isolation.
Between ant invasions and salt water spray, they
filled out a camping album, The Book of the Six,
that bore witness to their adventure.
Papà never stopped going to San Fruttuoso, and he
was crazy enough to even take Mamma there on
their honeymoon. They spent the first fifteen days
of their married life in a hut that was once a stall
for donkeys. Then Paola was born, and then I, and
the stall became the base from which we spent our
summers, on the beach by day, under the stars by
night, sometimes directly from the sea. On August
11 each year, Papà and Mamma had a tradition of
dining at Giovanni to celebrate their wedding
anniversary.
My mother had a good friend, Gianna (the sister of
the lifeguard and the daughter of Riccardo, the last
vegetable rope maker), with whom she would go
fishing for baby squid. In the silence of the night,
when the sea was calm, you could hear them
laughing as they cleaned out all the squid in the
area. Some would go into the freezer at the

Paradise in a Book
SSaann FFrruuttttuuoossoo -- IIll ppaarraaddiissoo ddiieettrroo
ll’’aannggoolloo è un curioso libro - Erga
editore, 94 pagine con foto e
illustrazioni, oltre a un Dvd, 15 euro
- che ha messo assieme le memorie
di due generazioni, quella di Sandro
Scarsi e quella di sua figlia Carla che
ne è l’autrice. Carla spiega di essere
stata aiutata da Beppe Veruggio,
dell’agenzia Firma, che grazie alla
sapiente mano di Bruna Arena ha
unito i racconti degli anni ’40 dei
loro padri e li ha fusi con le storie di
Carla stessa. Le immagini, storiche,
intime, montate in modo vivace,
hanno riempito le pagine,
accompagnando con ironia i testi.
A quelle prime cronache si sono
aggiunti in corso d’opera altri
racconti di altri amici di famiglia, di
Paola, sorella dell’autrice, della
presidente del FAI Giulia Maria
Crespi, di altri grandi genovesi come
Lilia Capocaccia o Viktor Uckmar. Ne
è nato un pot-pourri di ricordi a
tratti commovente, spesso molto
comico. Al volume è allegato un Dvd
con un documentario realizzato nel
1947 da Dino Risi, Tigullio minore e il
diario illustrato sfogliabile “Il campo
dei 6” che contiene le fotografie, i
racconti e le illustrazioni realizzate
nel 1947 dai due artisti genovesi
Ettore Veruggio e Sandro Scarsi.

ll’’aannggoolloo is an odd book (Erga
editore, 94 pages 15 euros) which
puts together the memories of two
generations: that of Sandro Scarsi
and his daughter, Carla, the author.
Carla was aided by Beppe Veruggio
of the Agenzia Firma, who thanks to
the knowing hand of Bruna Arena,
gathered up all the tales from the
forties of their fathers and fused
them with the stories that Carla tells.
The images, both historic and
intimate, mounted in a vivacious
way, fill the pages and accompany
the text with irony. To the first
telling, other stories from other
friends of the family were added:
from Paola, sister of the author; the
President of the FAI, Giulia Maria
Crespi; and from other Genoese
greats like Lilia Capocaccia and Viktor
Uckmar. The result is a pot-pourri of
memories, sometimes moving,
sometimes comic. With the book
comes a Dvd with a documentary
made in 1947 by Dino Risi, Tigullio
minore, and an illustrated diary “The
Camp of the 6” with photographs,
stories, and illustrations done in 1947
by the two Genoese artists, Ettore
Veruggio and Sandro Scarsi.
