By definition, ‘beauty’ is an ideal of physical perfection which few individuals attain. However, what
is different about our culture in the West is that we have vast consumer industries built on promoting
the ideal of ‘beauty’ and stimulating dissatisfaction with bodies that fall short. We also have
unprecedented technology to radically alter our bodies. The message disseminated is that changing
one’s physical appearance to be more ‘beautiful’ will make one happy, solving problems like shyness
