supervisory board should gather appropriate experi-
ence in these fields. As a rule, newcomers don‘t imme-
diately start at a DAX 30 company, such as Siemens or
Bayer AG. Initial experience can equally be acquired at
a company listed in the S-DAX or M-DAX.
So, the changes I just called for cannot be brought
about over night. Consequently, we need to tackle
these topics all the more energetically, so that things
will change in the medium term. And it also applies
to the enterprise as a whole that diversity in the working
world enriches life and daily work. It also leads to
more stable structures and a greater diversity of ideas.
Not only in my capacity as Chairman of the Corporate
Governance Code Commission is it important to me
to draw attention to the special significance of values
as the basis of good corporate governance. After all,
we must not allow our actions to be governed solely by
laws, rules, written recommendations or outside criticism.
Rather, we must do the right thing as a matter of
personal conviction – it must come „from within“. It is
important to ensure responsible action at all levels in
business enterprises – from top management to the
central departments and equally in the branch offices.
All business activity must therefore be geared to a
set of values. For me, the guiding concepts for coexistence
in the economy are: fairness, transparency
and accountability. That means:
