supervisory board should gather appropriate experi-<br />
ence in these fields. As a rule, newcomers don‘t imme-<br />
diately start at a DAX 30 company, such as Siemens or<br />
Bayer AG. Initial experience can equally be acquired at<br />
a company listed in the S-DAX or M-DAX.<br />
So, the changes I just called for cannot be brought<br />
about over night. Consequently, we need to tackle<br />
these topics all the more energetically, so that things<br />
will change in the medium term. And it also applies<br />
to the enterprise as a whole that diversity in the working<br />
world enriches life and daily work. It also leads to<br />
more stable structures and a greater diversity of ideas.<br />
Not only in my capacity as Chairman of the Corporate<br />
Governance Code Commission is it important to me<br />
to draw attention to the special significance of values<br />
as the basis of good corporate governance. After all,<br />
we must not allow our actions to be governed solely by<br />
laws, rules, written recommendations or outside criticism.<br />
Rather, we must do the right thing as a matter of<br />
personal conviction – it must come „from within“. It is<br />
important to ensure responsible action at all levels in<br />
business enterprises – from top management to the<br />
central departments and equally in the branch offices.<br />
All business activity must therefore be geared to a<br />
set of values. For me, the guiding concepts for coexistence<br />
in the economy are: fairness, transparency<br />
and accountability. That means:<br />

between owners, customers and employees.
