positive. Above all, it was pleasing to see how the
Continental Europeans had joined forces, particularly
as a result of the efforts of Germany and France. “Of
course, there is nevertheless still competition between
the nations and the national economies. That's why
it's important to consistently advocate a global international
trade policy.”
“Could it be that the crisis will result in an atmosphere
emerging like that in the 50s and 60s?” asked Klaus
Prömpers. “The recovery at that time was characterised
by joint efforts, by ‘rolling our sleeves up’. Does
the current crisis mean we have better chances of honesty,
solidarity, tackling the problem together and
cutting back our demanding expectations?”
In the opinion of Klaus-Peter Müller, that could well be
the case: “The fact that the crisis has led to a growing
debate about values, is a sign that people are beginning
to re-think. We attached too little value to values
for a long time. We must not fall back into our old
ways now. This is a task that we need to handle together.
The image of ‘rolling our sleeves up’ is very much in
line with my views.”
