Europe as a tool for sustainability
“Ethical, sustainable management pays off. But you can
also do good business in an unethical manner, at least
for a short time,” noted Rolf-Dieter Krause. “What
needs to happen to bring about more sustainable management?
Can politicians create appropriate structures?”
“Human capital and ecological action need to
be promoted,” replied Jean Asselborn, “and we have
only one tool for making progress in that respect: Europe.
20 percent greater efficiency, 20 percent more renewable
energies, 20 percent less emissions by the year
2020 – that is a target. That is what we need if our planet
is still to be habitable at the end of this century.” In addition
to which, it was important in times of crisis, in particular,
to make greater use of “human” capital, because
innovation in businesses was only possible in this
way. “That’s why we need to develop the ‘tool of Europe’.
We mustn’t forget the agreements in the Treaty
of Lisbon. We’ve made considerable progress in that respect,
but there still remains a lot to be done, and we
must review the guidelines in 2010.”
