Marianna wurde als Mann geboren. Als solcher führte sie ein scheinbar normales Leben. Erst mit 43 Jahren
fasste sie den Mut, ihr wahres Selbst nicht mehr zu verstecken. Call Me Marianna zeigt ihren turbulenten
Transformationsprozess und erzählt über die radikalen Auswirkungen von Geschlechtsumwandlungen,
über Ausgrenzung und Diskriminierung. Der Preis für ihre Selbstbestimmung scheint hoch zu sein, denn
gesellschaftliche und familiäre Akzeptanz bleiben Marianna verwehrt. Ein von ihr geschriebenes Theaterstück
sowie eine Liebesbeziehung zu einem älteren Mann sind Hoffnungsschimmer, ihrer Isolation zu entkommen.
Filmemacherin Karolina Bielawska begleitete die sympathische Transsexuelle ziemlich lang auf ihrem Weg.
Die enge Beziehung zwischen der Regisseurin und der von ihr porträtierten Frau ist allseits zu spüren. Die
daraus resultierende feinsinnige Erzählweise brachte dem Dokumentarfilm unter anderem vier Auszeichnungen
am 55. Krakau Film Festival ein. „Call Me Marianna wirft ein analytisch-inspiriertes Licht auf unsere Gesellschaft
und lässt zugleich die außergewöhnliche innere Stärke der Protagonistin ans Tageslicht treten“, urteilte
die Jury. Ein außergewöhnliches Einzelschicksal und ein ergreifendes Plädoyer für Toleranz und Mitgefühl.

Biografie Karolina Bielawska
Karolina Bielawska wurde 1978 in Zakopane
geboren. Sie absolvierte die Andrzej Wajda Master
School of Film Directing in Warschau und die
Schlesische Universität in Katowice, wo sie den
Studiengang Regie abschloss. Ihre Kurzfilme und
Dokumentationen wurden auf wichtigen internationalen
und polnischen Filmfestivals gezeigt
und ausgezeichnet. So gewann sie etwa 2010
mit Warsaw Available das Goldene Steckenpferd
für den besten polnischen Film beim Krakau Film
Festival, wo 2015 auch ihr aktuellster Film Call
Me Marianna als bester Film und mit dem Publikumspreis
ausgezeichnet wurde.

Marianna was born a man. And as such she had led a seemingly normal life. It was only at the age of 43
that she had gathered sufficient courage not to hide her true self any longer. Call Me Marianna shows her
turbulent process of transformation and tells about the radical impact of gender reassignment, about social
exclusion and discrimination. The price for self-determination seems to be high, for Marianna is unable to
obtain acceptance by the society and by her family. A play written by her and a romantic relationship with
an older man provide glimmers of hope to escape from her isolation. Filmmaker Karolina Bielawska accompanied
the congenial transsexual for quite a long time on her journey. The close relationship between the
director and the woman portrayed by her is noticeable in every respect. The documentary's subtle narration
resulted in as much as four awards at the 55th Krakow Film Festival among others. "Call Me Marianna throws
an analytically inspired light on our society and unlocks the protagonist's extraordinary inner strength", was
the jury's opinion. The exceptional fate of an individual and a gripping plea for tolerance and compassion.
