DOWN THE RIVER
Axinla Aşağı
Ali, der Trainer einer Rudermannschaft,
steckt in einer waschechten Lebenskrise.
Seine Ehefrau Leyla kann er kaum
noch ertragen, und wäre da nicht sein
Sohn Ruslan, wäre er schon längst mit
Sasha, seiner Geliebten, durchgebrannt.
Seinen Frust reagiert Ali entweder an
Team wirft. Es folgt ein großer Schock,
denn kurz darauf ereilt Ali die Nachricht,
dass Ruslan beim Schwimmen im Fluss
ertrunken sei. Getrieben von schlechtem
Gewissen, macht sich Ali auf den Weg,
um den vom Fluss weggespülten Leichnam
zu finden. Die Suche gerät zum
Selbstfindungstrip. Down the River ist ein
lebensnah erzähltes Drama über eine
kaputte Familie. Wechselseitige Erwartungen
und Abhängigkeiten scheinen
die allesamt voneinander enttäuschten
Hauptfiguren zu erdrücken. Regisseur
Asif Rustamov gibt der tiefgründigen Geschichte
mit imposanter Bildsprache und
aufwühlender Filmmusik einen grandiosen
Rahmen. Besonders be eindruckend
sind dabei die atemberaubenden idyllischen
Landschaftsaufnahmen, die einen
starken Kontrast zur düsteren Story
bilden, gleichzeitig aber die emotionalen
Momente des Films unterstreichen.
Ali, the coach of a rowing team, is in the
thralls of a true mid-life crisis. He can
hardly stand his wife Leyla anymore, and
if it were not for his son Ruslan he would
have eloped with his mistress Sasha a
long time ago. Ali takes out his frustration
either on his wife or on Ruslan, who
is also a member of the rowing team
but unable to fulfil his father's high expectations.
The conflict escalates when
Ali kicks his son out of the team right
before a race. This incident is followed by
a huge shock when Ali is informed that
Ruslan has drowned while swimming
in the river. Driven by remorse, Ali goes
off looking for his son's dead body that
was washed away by the river. The search
turns into a quest for self-discovery. Down
the River is a true-to-life drama about a
dysfunctional family. Mutual expectations
and interdependencies seem to crush the
protagonists who are deeply disappointed
with each other. Director Asif Rustamov
provides a marvellous frame including impressive
pictures and a disturbing soundtrack
to the deeply moving story. Especially
fascinating are the stunningly idyllic
landscape views that contrast with the
gloomy story, but at the same time also
enhance the film's emotional moments.
