musical abilities. In 1964 Prof. Hermannjosef
Rübben was appointed conductor. Under bis
guidance the choir achieved a concert capacity
of more tha 200 singers while 260 active
Singers are members. Due to the merits of
the conductor there is no shortage of singers.
Graduates from the choir-owned school continuously
become members after they have
succesfully passed the entrance examination.
Dr. Max Adenauer, the former Town Clerk
(Oberstadtdirektor) of Cologne and son of the
first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of
Germany and Honorary Member of the choir,
Dr. Konrad Adenauer, is a member in the
first ranks of the choir who is very actively
engaged in the public and social life of
Cologne.
The choir sees its task not only in presenting
Choral songs- but, above all, in maintaining
and establishing personal relations here and
abroad.
This was the aim under which concert-tours
were arranged in Italy, Switzerland, Great
Britain, Holland, Belgium, France, Luxem
burg and Austria.
On its tour to South Africa the choir will give
proof of its ability. It will be the first time
since its foundation that the choir leaves
Europe.
Although not everything about the choir can
be listed here, the following institution deserves
to be mentioned: the amateur theatre
group "Cacilia Wolkenburg" which was founded
in 1874. Its name derives from the Caci
lia Church which was situated next to the
"Wolkenburg" and destroyed during World
War II.
Every year, the members of this group are
guests of the Municipal Theatre and in the
operahouse they perform their "Divertisse
mentchen" — a kind of musical in the
Cologne dialect. A script is written for this
Special purpose and accompanied by wellknown
melodies. All parts — even those for
women and the ballet — are played by men.
In this season the 11 Performances were
frequently by 15000 spectators.
